When you call to make a reservation or use their website directly most will not actually hold the money. Its just a “gurantee” for your reservation, but some may require a nights stay deposit. Once you arrive, yes they will hold that money plus some for “incidentals” like long distance phone calls, movie rentals, etc.
If you book thru a booking agent, they will charge the entire price of stay right then and there.

When you use your debit card to hold a reservation the merchant can take whatever amount the required deposit is, and it will be with held from your available balance.
It will not be in your account for your use. It will be pending to pay for holding the reservation. When you check out they will refund any difference you haven’t used.

Some hotels will charge the credit card on your reservation a deposit or prepayment for the entire stay. Contact the hotel you booked with to see if they need to charge your card in advance for anything. If your account does not have available credit when the hotel needs it, the reservation might be cancelled. They needed your Visa account number for good reason- mostly to make sure they get revenue from the room you reserved. You might consider sending a check or money order for advance payment and avoid using your Visa check card.
