How long does a David’s Bridal garment bag store a dress?
I recently purchased my wedding gown for my wedding that is in May 2011. (Yes, I know it’s way ahead of time, but the gown was being discontinued and I wanted it. ) David’s Bridal gave me a garment bag to store my dress in. I was wondering how long my dress would stay fresh in that bag.

When I was engaged to my ex, I bought my dress from David’s in August of 2003. I just sold the dress this year on craigslist, and the girl who bought it only had to have the wrinkles steamed out of it. I kept it in the garment bag (one of the all white ones that you can’t see through) the entire time, other than trying it on a few times a few years ago. It was in immaculate condition. (Well, other than the wrinkles…lol…hadn’t been out of the bag since before 2006.) The dress was pretty plain though. Just a sheath type dress, no built in crinoline or poofy skirt or anything. It should be ok, as long as the dress isn’t so big/poofy that the bag looks like it’s too tight for the dress.

I assume by garment bag you mean the white plastic ones they have, not just the clear plastic ones, right? Anyway, you should be able to keep your dress in there until 2011. However, wrap a white cotton sheet around your dress and keep the bag partially unzipped. This will prevent the plastic from yellowing your dress. I got married last May (2008) and bought my dress in August 2007. My dress has been in that bag (wrapped with a white cotton sheet) every day except for when it was altered and steamed and of course on my wedding day. It still looks brand new. At some point I plan on getting it cleaned and preserved, but I just haven’t had an extra couple hundred dollars lying around for that.

Hey, i just wanted to add that yes, the bag will preserve your dress until that awesome day… BUT.. be careful, because those bags are so cheap! Mine ripped if i moved it like an inch! i had a kinda poofy dress, so it may be different with yours, but i was just wanting to let you know that they will replace your bag if you have your receipt. i had to replace my bag FOUR times because it was so cheap and kept ripping!!! :) but my dress was fine! i loved it!!
so congrats on getting your dress and hope the day is beautiful! :)

Did they give you the plastic cover kind of bag or an actual garment bag? I have mine in both even though it’d be fine without the plastic. I did the white sheet thing another poster suggested (just wrapped a white sheet around the dress to keep it away from the plastic). I bought mine 2 years ahead of time as well, and currently it is looking just fine (I’ve had it over a year so far). The only thing to be careful about is if it is a heavy dress, you may not want it hanging forever so the material doesn’t stretch at all. Also, I keep my zipper on the bag opened just a little so the dress doesn’t start to smell plasticy from the bag. Congrats!

You don’t really need to keep it “fresh” unless it’s made from perishable material … any garment bag will keep it fine until 2011.
My advice is to put it in the back of a dark and not often used closet (in the garment bag) so that it doesn’t get exposed to anything (sunlight, dust, moisture, etc) that could damage or wear it. Then the week of the wedding take it to a dry cleaners and have it professionally steam cleaned and stemmed so all the wrinkles and any “storage” smell is eliminated.
Also, as tempting as it might be, don’t pull it out to look at it or show it off to people. You should really just forget it’s in there.
My mom used to own a bridal store and she had more than one bride come to her bawling the week of her wedding! Many brides that bought their dresses early, and kept in their homes would pull it out to show anyone who visited … the dress would end up filthy (make-up, sweat, etc) and sometimes with broken zippers or little tears from being pulled out and tried on so many times!
So they would need rush last minute repairs and to have the entire thing dry cleaned (which isn’t cheap at $105+ for wedding gowns) You don’t want to be dealing with that the week of your wedding!
Congrats on starting early … but now just put it away and forget you did!
Best Wishes!
