Most often because they book in advance and cannot make it, or maybe because of last-minute changes for business trips, holidays etc. Airlines overbook their flights to ensure they are full if people don’t show up… But an overbooked flight makes your chances of being upgraded higher!

it is simply because of forgetfulness or carelessenes. It once happened that my uncle was to board a flight at 0005 am,supposing that it would be five ‘o’ clock he arrived at the airport then! There might be many other such uncles, maybe thats why most of the flights remain empty?!

Well. I am in airline industry and believe me most of our flights are full… But, of course, it happens. But usually the reason pax are late is a delay of their connection flights.

Because they are frequent flyers & can’t make up their minds to take that flight. They usually reschedule onto the next later flight, or an earlier flight depending on their business needs.
It also depends on the airline. When a big carrier flies a route more frequently(for example: LA to NYC more than several times a day) people who travel on these flights frequently; know that they can make a last minute change & still get home on the same day earlier or later.
Airlines usually charge passengers for changing their ticket (if the passenger purchased a changeable ticket).
But if they’re a special member or have a full fare ticket they can change it for free!
Airlines usually already know how many no-shows there will be according to last years usual no-show attendance(if the prior year was a normal).
But of course; factor in everything else like weather problems, mechanical, late boarding, & missed connections, & we got ourselves a wonderful flying experience.

many people book their flights well in advance of the flight date so events occur which makes it impossible to goon that flight or they simply change their mind. The airlines are obligated to maintain that reservation until a certain time before the actual flight giving them the opportunity to show up and pay for the flight , what has worked well for me is showing up early for my flight and getting myself on standby for an earlier flight. you are guaranteed your spot on your flight but if an opening pops up, you get to fly earlier for a nominal fee

Because once word got out that you were on board—and with your reputation as an international terrorist–they decided to fly a later flight.
