Why do Airlines in the United States have outdated unimpressive fleets?
American airlines still operate MD-83′s, 757-222′s, 767-200′s! United still have old aircraft aswell! NWA still fly the DC-10-30! and even if airlines in the US operate newer aircraft such as Americans 737-800, they never seem to have winglets on them? its as if american airlines etc want to have an unimpressive fleet compostion!!! Aeroflot has a nicer fleet to say the least.
Aviation in general is older here than anywhere else. Never-the-less, we maintain our equipment in such a way that age is not as much a factor. ALL major components are replaced or rebuilt religously on a regular basis according to a specific schedule outlined in ATA chapter 5, and Every aircraft has an Airworthiness Limitations document which has specific times or cycles each component may endure before it is MANDATORY it be replaced. I am an A&P with IA. Believe me these thing are VERY closely regulated. No other industry in the world is more closely regulated except for the U.S. nuclear industry.
