Next to Normal’s I Miss the Mountains Triumphant by Sheera Ben-David
0John Hoglund, of Cabaret Scenes recently commented, âOn her exceptional new album, On a Carousel, Sheera Ben-David celebrates a decade of songs from her life. Recorded live at the Metropolitan Room, with her multi-talented brother Adam Ben-David as musical director, the album is a theatrical journey of reflection that resonates with anyone who ever had a dream. â
Â
The review suggested that starting with the lilting âI Miss the Mountainsâ (Kitt-Yorkey), Ben-David captures both an innocence and a wise maturity fused with a yearning for life that is palpable. With careful phrasing, she unleashes a waterfall of emotion in song that allows the listener to peek inside a centered artist who has weathered some bumps and moved on. Warm readings on âHereâs to Lifeâ (Butler-Molinary) and Leslie Bricusseâs âWhen I Look in Your Eyesâ are perfect samplings of one who has lived and understands the subtexts sheâs singing about. She digs even deeper on John Bucchinoâs âIf I Ever Say Iâm Over Youâ and âThis Momentâ as well as on two of Jacques Brelâs frenetic mad scenes, âBrusselsâ and âCarousel,â where she gets to breathe new life into these showy theatrical neo-classic war horses.
Â
Sheera said of âI Miss the Mountainsâ:
Â
âTom Kitt wrote this song for his show, Next to Normal. He is a friend of ours and I fell in love with the song and began to perform it before the show hit Broadway and became a Tony award winner. I was challenged and intrigued with the content being about mental illness. I know a special piece when I hear it. â
Â
The album was recently named Cabaret Hotline Onlineâs 2008 Outstanding Female Vocalist Album. Complementing Adam Ben-Davidâs sublime arrangements are Mat Fieldes on bass, David Rozenblatt and Damien Bassman on drums and J. J. McGeehan on guitars.
Â
For decades, Sheeraâs mother, Batyah Godfrey, was a soloist at the Metropolitan Opera. Their father, Kerry Ben-David – who met Batyah at Juilliard – was cantor at Scarsdale Synagogue for two decades after working at the Rome Opera as a Fulbright scholar.
“When we were growing up, we spent a lot of time backstage at the Met,” recalls Sheera, “I spent a lot of time being exposed to what I consider still the finest of the finest when it comes to music. I have a deep appreciation for classical and opera and all those things. “
She also was drawn to sacred singing.
Â
This June, the New York cabaret star gave birth to her first child, Baxter. Sheera insists that Baxter is her best performance to date, however those listening to this extraordinary CD may beg to differ when listening to this amazing young woman sing.
Â
At the 20th Annual Cabaret Convention held this past October at Lincoln Center in Manhattan Sheera Ben-David received the Julie Wilson Award.  The CD, On a Carousel, is produced and arranged by Adam Ben-David, and is available at: http://www. cdbaby. com/cd/sheerabendavid2/from/tblink.

Sheera said of “If I Ever Say I’m Over You” (with Music and Lyrics by John Bucchino)
“This has been part of my repertoire and my soul for quite a while and whenever I get a chance to sing it live, I feel as though I am slipping into a warm and cozy bed. Although the song makes me feel that anguish of past loves, I am drawn to the open expression and confession of the lyrics. ”

Find your Inspiration in Among the Local Culture and Beauty
0Sanibel Island, Florida is perhaps best known for the gorgeous local beaches and waterways but that certainly does not mean there is any lack of culture in the local area. Far from it; in fact. Visitors to Sanibel will discover that over the years the area has served as inspiration to numerous cultural pursuits, particularly writers. It would seem that the tranquility and peace of Sanibel is just what is needed to wash away the cares of the outside world and set forth the soul of inspiration for the written word.
“Gift from the Sea” was penned by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of the world famous aviator Charles Lindbergh. In her book, published in 1955, Lindbergh discusses the unique serenity that can be found in the seaside setting of Captiva Island and the effect that it had on her personally.
Perhaps one of the most well known contemporary writers associated with the Sanibel area is Randy Wayne White. The Doc Ford mystery novels, which went on to become bestsellers, find inspiration in the natural beauty of Sanibel Island. Even the titles of the books seem to draw readers into the captivating world of this beautiful corner of Florida, ranging from “Sanibel Flats” to “Ten Thousand Islands” to “Captiva. ” Not only does White manage to deliver a captivating mystery to his readers but also weaves in the area’s unique ecology and history for good measure.
White is not the only mystery writer to find inspiration in the beauty of Sanibel. It is rumored that John D. MacDonald may have written some of his own well known mysteries while visiting at the home of a friend on Cabbage Key.
There are even tales that have come out of Sanibel for younger readers. James Kaserman is the author of two books related to the Sanibel area; Gasparilla, Pirate Genius” and “The Legend of Gasparilla, A Tale for All Ages. ” The latter title went on to win the Florida Publisher’s Association 2003 President’s Book Award for Best Florida Title. “Gasparilla, Pirate Genius” is based on the legend of the namesake of Gasparilla Island, Jose Gaspar.
If you have ever considered writing the Great American Novel, come on down to Sanibel, where inspiration soars. Even if writing is not in your blood but you enjoy a good tale, Sanibel is definitely the place to be.
