Viii Dipol Holiday Photo Contest 2009

0

Subject of the photo contest is a challenge that, at first, seems to be difficult to be up to. What can be interesting in antennas? Can they really inspire and become the focus of artistic interest?

DIPOL organizes this photographic competition for the eight time. The seven previous editions showed that antennas can be interesting subjects of the environment we live in, and – besides useful functions – they can bring artistic inspiration. We hope the competitors will again take up the task that, apart from having aesthetic qualities, requires dash of imagination, grain of wit, and sometimes a certain measure of risk.

Antennas constitute a part of our everyday landscape. Many of us can remember all of these past “forests” of traditional TV antennas that disappear from our lives being replaced by “dishes” of satellite antennas, and “tubes” or “columns” of communications devices.

Some of them irritate our sense of beauty and ruin the looks of even the most architecturally-advanced buildings, but others may have just an opposite effect, creating a sort of unity and harmony with their surroundings.

There will be 3 prizes:

I. Satellite HDTV receiver Ferguson HF-8900

II. Satellite HDTV receiver Ferguson HF-8500

III. Satellite HDTV receiver Ferguson HF-8500

Works can be submitted from June 1st, 2009 to September 30, 2009. The works will be adjudicated by photographer and designer from Krakow, Mr. Pawel Zechenter (I and II prize).

III prize will be awarded by our technical department – the main criterion is ability of communicating technical ideas in an interesting way.

The results of the previous editions are available at DIPOL website. In 2008 the first prize went to Mr. Dariusz M?czynski for the aesthetic values of the series

In a distorting mirror“.

Is Nato “Alive And Kicking” Or Dying Out?

IS NATO “Alive and Kicking” OR dying Out?

By Prof. Hasan Yahya

In two months, NATO the world’s largest  and most durable military alliances will celebrate its 60th anniversary. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has racked up four incomplete achievements, One was facing down the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The other,  the process of “war on terror”  in Iraq and Afghanistan which still bringing  serious challenges, especially in Afghanistan, the third is the tension between the U. S. and some of its European allies, and finally,  the newly resurgent Russia through the SCO.

Email Picture

In a gesture during a NATO-Ukraine Commission roundtable at the NATO defense ministers meeting in Krakow, Poland, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer,  NATO secretary-general acknowledges that the challenge in Afghanistan is complex. But added that no current rift in the alliance. While he has been an outspoken advocate of sending more troops to Afghanistan and a critic of some allies members hesitates to provide more assistance in the NATO operations.

This year marked the end of the five-year term as secretary-general which will end two months after the 60th anniversary celebration this year in May. While in his office in Brussels. Some critics asked him about one of the challenges face NATO in terms of  incongruity  and divisions  among the allies. He denied drifting of members because NATO is operating in two different political and security environments which certainly different 60 years ago. Now NATO is facing cyber-defense and energy security discussions. In addition to the fifty thousand soldiers in Afghanistan and will be more soon.   He emphasized that NATO  still in the process of transformation, NATO is “as alive and kicking as it has ever been”  as if NATO still in a child in his mother’s womb. He did not say reviving or dying [After 60 years old] as some might describe such transformation.

  The idea of NATO death

NATO as a global arm force may face various obstacles. Some people  say that crisis among the allies are not simply post-cold war or post 9/11, phenomena, the best times of NATO are when serious disputes occur. International events and disputes create opposing divisions in NATO with less influence on the forces vitality. In 2003, comments were made by commentators such as the need for existence of NATO. They say NATO is aging now and is dying, so time has come and gone, and today there is no legitimate reason for NATO to exist. Although the strong difference exhibited in the alliance over the war on Iraq have accelerated NATO irrelevancy, the root causes of its problems go much deeper, Consequently for bothy the US and EU, NATO is the best an errilevent distraction, and at worst toxic  to their responsive contemporary security needs.

Challenges for the NATO:

NATO’s faces three broad  challenges in it 60th anniversary, the map future for NATO reform has something to do with the long term vitality which is ultimately determined by several influences:

1. the challenge posed by future international events to its existing structure; 2. the challenge of existing abilities; and ; 3. the challenges of existing quality of relations between the allies, through the idea of keeping solidarity alive.

Concerning events, it is near impossible to assess NATO response to events that are as yet unknown. But the problem NATO will face is the future of the loss of threat NATO originally designed to counter. What NATO will do? How its structure will be in terms of enlargement or reduction of membership and abilities.

Concerning the quality of relations between NATO allies, it is more uncertain. The state of transatlantic relations was widely debated subject before 9/11. The divisions were obviously perceived to the war on Iraq, where demonstrations covered too many European nations against the war on Iraq. The period after 9/11, until now, has been some of the greatest highs for NATO, and the greatest lows between NATO allies. The high point certainly was on September 12, 2001, when NATO invoked the principle of Article 5. The lowest point however, was in 2002, the run up to the course of Operation Iraq Freedom (OIF) as they called it. Such war created an ample discussion and debate among NATO allies. Those who support and those who opposed the war on Iraq, but they remained convinced of the case against it.

Colin Powell asked NATO in Dec. 2003 to consider expanding its role. But many aspects have yet to be clarified, such as where and how about involvement in training forces, numbers, and states. On training Iraqi security forces was the most debate, two views arise: one with and one without, for the plans of US in the area which has less concern among the allies. This division of opinions may threat solidarity. Afghanistan was and still considered a tough job for the NATO and need more elaboration.

Afghanistan Challenge:

NATO’s role in the fight against terrorism is a complex challenge in Afghanistan the troops have increased by almost tenfold since 2004, and NATO still calling on its member states to do more. But the alliance essentially failed to achieve as recently announced by the British and France. Justification of increasing troops by President Barack Obama was that Afghanistan is a nation from the Middle Ages in 2001 and one of the poorest in the world, no one expect to finish the job in the marsh to democracy in eight years to the model of the United States or the Netherlands. Therefore, to do better, NATO need more forces. (President Obama recently authorized deploying an additional 17,000 U. S. troops to Afghanistan). Such troops are needed to  rebuilding, helping to reconstruct, and to develop a nation. In fact, Afghanistan is more serious problem for not for the governments of NATO only, but also the EU, the World Bank, the United Nations, important individual donors like Japan and others which need a comprehensive approach. Despite the role NATO plays in Afghanistan, polls show negative support of the troops on Afghan Land. What was striking about these polls was for the question: “By whom would you like to be governed — by an Afghan government or by the Taliban?” 82% say by the Afghan government and only 4% select Taliban. But in terms of the civilian casualties from air strikes in an environment like Afghanistan no one can avoid civilian casualties completely, the polls negatively high. This issue will have negative consequences as expected for the hearts and minds.

While the US stressed the need for alliance members besides the U. S. to step up to the plate and take on more responsibility, many of them disagree that  Afghanistan is different than Iraq. Because  NATO’s objectives in the region is to look at Afghanistan in a much stronger regional context with Pakistan where such concern is not shared by NATO members.

Other challenges: The dangerous proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and the missiles to transport those weapons over longer distances which make NATO emphasizes on the core function which is defending the integrity of NATO members. These two challenges may be dealt with in another article. (1205 words)

Poland – A Great Place to Spend Your Holiday

0

If you are looking for a perfect summer holiday destination, European countries like Italy, Greece, Spain, France, and the UK may come in mind. Those are the usual destinations that holiday-makers go for. To get away from the usual tourist crowds, spend your holiday vacation at Poland. Get to explore the exciting and beautiful place of Poland without sacrificing your budget. With Poland’s rich history, torn apart by different factions and put back together several times, you will be awed by its fighting spirit. You will see how the fighting tore an entire area at the Warsaw city and you will also see the efforts made to restore a part of it. Another city famous for its magnificent beauty is Lodz.

The most visited place in Poland though is the Krakow (Cracow). It has a population of one million and almost the same number of tourists visit the place every year. It is where the oldest universities in Europe are located including the Jagiellonian University.

The largest medieval market square in Europe is also located in Poland which is the city centre, or town square. It is actually a World Heritage Site. The best time to go here is on weekends where you will be able to find various things from food to household items from the different markets that set up here. In the center is the Cloth Hall that originally serve as a conduit for the cloth trade, but has been modified over time. The St. Mary’s Church which is just near the town square is one of the most beautiful churches in Poland. It has an altar carved by Veit Stoss (Wit Stwosz). A bugle is played every hour in the highest tower to commemorate the Tatar raids on the city which happened in the 13th century. The Town Hall Tower, on the other hand, occupies the entire western section of the square.

The square is a great place to visit during your holidays to Poland. You can spend your day sitting there and get lost in the vibe of the city. There are also a lot of performers that have spread throughout the square. There are jugglers and musicians, and the cafes and their outdoor seating are also scattered everywhere.

Two of the places you should not also forget to visit is the royal castle and the royal route. The route starts from Matejko Square. From the square, you then go to Wawel Hill where the castle is located. The castle is a huge complex built in the year 1000. This is a place where you should really see yourself and enjoy the sight. Then buy yourself a ticket to see the dragon in an underground passage at the bottom of the hill. The dragon that breathes fire once in every minute is just actually a model. Nevertheless, its a must-see for everyone.

Karkow is a wonderful city for all people. If you want cheap holidays, there are a lot of hotels and hostels where you can stay in that offers discounts. There are also a lot of restaurants and cafes around the square where you can buy your food. You do not have to think of a boring night because the city has a lively nightlife with over 100 pubs and clubs. So expect for an all night fun in your holidays.

So for your cheap holiday plans, Poland is undoubtedly a great place to visit.

0

FC Barcelona is one of the biggest football clubs in the world. They are based in the famous Spanish League – La Liga. Without doubt we can say that FC Barcelona is the biggest football club in Spain. FC Barcelona is still the flag bearer of Catalan identity, a fact which is helped by being the biggest football club in that region. FC Barcelona boasts a stadium, Nou Camp which has the highest seating capacity among Europe’s premier football clubs. But Barca’s success ratio at the Europe’s premier football club championship – Champions League is not that great. Barca have won it twice and looks good for a third this season, but by FC Barcelona’s standard and quality they should have had more. Among the Europe’s football club Real Madrid, AC Milan and Liverpool have had the most number of victories. FC Barcelona started their 2009 Champions League in the qualification stage as they came third among La Liga football clubs. Barca was drawn to face Wisla Krakow in the Qualification – they won the first leg 4-0 but lost the second 1-0. Three Most Romantic Travel Destinations For Married Couples

0

There comes a time in a married couple’s relationship when you have to take a break from the rigors of your jobs and family responsibilities. You need time to be together and reconnect, just like old times, to keep the fire going in your relationship.

Going away on a holiday takes a lot of planning and preparation. The most exciting decision would be where to go. Married couples like you assess your common dreams and interests, and the bonding starts right here.

One option would be to travel back to a place with sentimental value to both of you where you can relive wonderful memories all over again. Love will be lovelier this second trip around. Another option would be to go to a place you have never been before and discover new sights together. This would be one of the greatest adventures in your married life.

Three of the most romantic places any married couple would love to travel to would be:

- Paris. Who wouldn’t fall in love with Paris? Known as the “City of Love”, it’s a dream destination for lovers everywhere. Your first stop would be to have your pictures taken at the Arc de Triomphe landmark which welcomes visitors into Paris. Three of the top sights a couple should see are the Musee de Louvre where Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo are displayed, the elevator ride up Eiffel Tower to view the outskirts of Paris, and the Notre Dame Cathedral with its romantic Rose Windows. A couple could hold hands and promenade along the nearby Siene River where you could dine in side cafés or have picnics in parks and gardens at the Tuileries near Louvre. These descriptions are nothing compared to the real experience of Paris in its entirety, day or night.

- Venice. Who wouldn’t love a gondola ride down the Grand Canal to the tune of O Sole Mio? It’s one of the best moments to hold hands and gaze at each other’s eyes once more. Just as romantic would be a stroll through the Piazza San Marco, the most famous square in Venice where you could enjoy the fine architecture of old churches and partly-submerged buildings. You could dine at fancy Italian gourmet restaurants to your heart’s content. Those who are fascinated by Greece would love Santorini Island with its serene beaches and its villages nestled atop volcanic cliffs. Santorini has one of the most spectacular sunsets you could ever experience. If sunsets mean a lot to both of you, then this is the place.

- Hawaii. Who wouldn’t go head over heels about a second honeymoon in Maui or Kauai? Among all other top beach destinations like Bali, Maldives, and Mykonos, Hawaii remains the best-loved tropical paradise of all. A highlight would be taking a honeymoon cruise to see famous sights like Waimea Canyon, Wailua Waterfalls, Hanalei and Fern Grotto. Add to that other waterfalls, beaches, volcanoes, and rainforests which abound in the islands. If you both love watching a sunrise, the Magic Isle of Maui is to place to see it together.

Married life is all about enjoying days and nights and watching sunrises and sunsets together, be it at home or during your travels. It’s all in the moments.
