Wedding insurance is increasingly taking on the role of holiday insurance for some couples, with an increasing number of people choosing to have their wedding either abroad, or at least a fair distance from where they live. Although traditionally couples have been married in their local church or registry office, today many people are taking advantage of the cheaper flights and packages which make overseas weddings both affordable and attractive. However, more than ever before, making sure that your wedding is insured is vital to help protect against the unforeseen.

Weddings are fraught with difficulties as it is, with so much to organise, so many choices to make, so many people with whom to liaise, and at times it can seem very much as though it’s a minor military operation. In some cases, not so much of a minor operation either. But whilst ‘normal’ weddings might be hard enough as it is, when you start to consider overseas weddings, the dangers and risks become even more important to consider.

If you’re being married round the corner and the chauffeur driven limousine can’t collect you because it’s stuck in traffic, had an accident, or the driver’s lost his license, then at least you can book a taxi, or make do with your own transport. It might not be quite as romantic and picture perfect as originally planned, but at least you’ll get to the church on time.

However, if you’re planning to go abroad for your wedding, then suitable wedding insurance will be critical, because if the plane can’t fly because of adverse weather, engineering problems, staff strikes, or other problems then you may well be facing the prospect of having to postpone all the arrangements. That in itself will cost a very significant sum of money, and the only way in which you are likely to be covered or protected is if you have had your wedding insured.

For the price of around £30, which is little more than the taxi fair to get you to your wedding if the limousine breaks down, you can have almost every aspect of your wedding covered. Although insurance policies vary, most wedding insurance policies will protect you against financial loss due to the failure of service providers, accidental damage or loss and theft.

One of the surprisingly common problems people face are wedding rings, since these are not only small, but they tend to be left about, or passed to others to look after before the ceremony. All too often these can be lost or stolen, and should this be the case, you could be looking at a very large sum of money. Weddings may often be occasions when best jewellery is brought out, and sadly things do get lost or stolen. Although it won’t solve every problem, at least knowing that financially you are secure and won’t have to worry will make a great deal of difference in terms of helping you to relax and enjoy your day.

After all, you don’t want to spend your entire wedding checking that hired suits are not damaged by having drinks or food spilled on them, nor of the many other problems or potential issues which could occur. Relax, and know that it is all protected – including in some cases personal liability.

You may have a home insurance policy, but it is unlikely to cover you and your guests when away from home, and this is where wedding insurance can make a good deal of difference. With so much food and drink being carried about at receptions, confetti helping to create a slippery floor, and people milling about with drinks and expensive gifts, the danger of something being broken or damaged is significantly high. If you’re taking the ceremony abroad, think just how much more difficult it will be to deal with any problems there. What would you do if there was an accident that delayed you returning home?

Wedding insurance is one of many types of insurance policy, and it will be important to compare insurers to see what is on offer. In some cases you may find a holiday insurance package that will cover much of your requirements, though it will not cover wedding-specific issues such as lost photos, inadequate or missing service providers or thefts. But similarly, not all wedding policies will cover travel and overseas ceremonies, which is why comparing policies will be so important.
