International Travel Insurance?
Question : International Travel Insurance?
I’m an international (asian) student at the University of Minnesota and i plan to do some traveling in Europe in august (UK and few EU countries). Any idea on how should I prepare for the visa requirement? Like how much bank balance do they usually like to see? Is international travel insurance mandatory? Where do i get it from? Help me out please…thanks.
Best answer:
Never travel without insurance!!! I’m living abroad in China and do lots of backpacking into South East Asia during my work breaks. I thoroughly recommend looking into world nomads, they have a good policy (I used to work in insurance in Australia and no my way around the loop holes). Plus it’s all on line so it’s a lot easier than a lot of the other travel insurance available. World Nomads is also recommended by Rough Guides and Lonely Planet :)
Hope that helps.
Citizen of Brunei Darrussalam, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea do not need a visa to travel to the United Kingdom and all other countries of the European Union. Should you hold another citizenship you will need to apply for two visa, one for the United Kingdom, and a second one for the Schengen countries on the European continent which covers all EU countries except Bulgaria and Romania.
The visa for the United Kingdom needs to be applied for and paid for online. You also will need to get an appointment at the USCIS Application Support Center in St. Paul to have your biometrics and fingerprints taken. The application form needs to be printed out and mailed together with your supporting documents and the biometrics enrollment to the U.K. Border Agency at the Consulate General in Chicago. Visa application in general are decided based upon the supporting documents provided; a visa interview is only required in exceptional cases when the paperwork does not suffice for a positive decision. The U.K. does not determine the required bank balance for a general visitor visa application. It requires you to have enough money to support and accommodate yourself without working or help from public funds, or you will be supported and accommodated by relatives or friends. The bank balance also may depend on the itinerary you provide, someone who plans to stay at 4-star hotels will for sure need more than a holder of an international youth hostel card. France for example requires at least $100 per day of stay plus the cost for transportation and insurance.

The application for the Schengen visa needs to be addressed to the country you enter first if you stay in each country for about the same time or to the country in which you plan to stay longest if you have a main destination. Schengen visa in general need to be applied for in person at the Consulate General which consular district covers Minnesota. For the most bigger countries having several Consulates in the country it will be at Chicago, for smaller countries it may also be New York or Washington. The procedures and requirements are similar but details may be different dependent upon the country you apply to. I therefore could only provide general remarks.

To apply for a Schengen visa you will need to have a travel insurance which
• covers all Schengen countries
• covers at least €30,000 [~$50,000]
