Got Healthcare? (Festival Cut)

Did you think health care reform has been resolved? Think again. The day after The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was passed by Congress in March 2010, 22 million Americans still remained without health care. In august 2010 that number rose to 27 million. This film shows protesters at Los Angeles area health care reform rallies on both sides of the issues as they speak their minds and concerns, juxtaposed against statements by President Obama, revealing some interesting and enlightening information not seen in the news media.

Explanations of what single payer and public options plans, including President Obama’s speeches, detail what these plans include. An expose of the anti-reform tea baggers shows their reliance on misinformation, lies, and deceptive arguments. Cries of socialism and Hitler are questioned and debunked.

The film is a stream of conversation between protesters and speakers on both sides. It is not formally narrated but instead relies on statements by interviewees. Included are clips from President Obama’s White House press conference on health care reform and his Address to a Joint Session of Congress in September, 2009. The film was shot with a consumer HDV camera and without a crew. The filmmaker relied on protest event organizers to provide interesting settings where people gathered with signs, speeches, and even song in protest for health care reform. Over 60 people were interviewed including notable doctors and health care professionals who support a strong health care reform movement.
