Question: Do I need travel insurance or health insurance to go from Canada to the USA?

If I decide to go to the states, on a whim, is it mandatory or just suggested that i have travel and health insurance?
I am 18 years old, a legal adult.

im from australia and i would strongly suggest you get both — from what i hear the US health system is so expensive
