How do I get from the Kahului airport (Maui, HI) to my hotel in Lahaina inexpensively?

Question: How do I get from the Kahului airport (Maui, HI) to my hotel in Lahaina inexpensively?
Trying to stay cheap and eco-friendly. No use in renting a car for just me.

I am on a really tight budget. I am only staying for four days. Three days only if you account for the travel times. I plan to rent a bike to explore around the Kaanapali and Lahaina area.
I already have some tours and activities with transportation all set up so for those three days I don’t really have a need for a rental car.

I’ve looked into some airport shuttle services, and yikes (!) they are pricey! Taxi’s are out of the question.

Possibly is there a bus system?

If you can fly to the west Maui airport (Kapalua) instead, it’s only 4 miles away from lahaina as opposed to like 30.

There really isn’t a cheap way to get from Kahalui to Lahaina.

$ 28/day for a compact car. = $ 112 or about $ 140 with taxes. This would also give your to explore more of maui as it truly is a wonderful place even if you only have 4 days.

I really do not recommend getting a bike to explore Maui. Maui is not a bike friendly place. Perhaps keeping to some of the streets within Lahaina you would be fine but going from Kaanapali to Lahaina I believe is out of the question particularly if you have a relatively inexperienced biker.

If you are still intent on not renting a car then I would suggest a shuttle.

Aloha and Kapalua airport is only for small planes,twin props that go inter Island. Island Air flys out of there, and Golden Wings. All comercial flights come into Kahului. Just check out the bus schedule and use it but it depends on what time you arrive here but the schedule will tell you if they are running at that time. Otherwise they have the shuttle that comes here on the west side. One less car for us here is a good thing. Go green girl and Mahalo to you for being and showing Aloha. Have fun.

You could take the public bus around maui I know it goes to Lahania

Definitely Kapalua is MUCH closer to where you will be in Kaanapali/Lahaina, although Kapalua Airport is a small “2 lane” airport, you can catch a Commercial Propellar plane in from another Island but you cannot fly directly in from the Mainland to Kapalua the way you can to Kahului. So if you cannot fly into Kapalua, unless you know someone on the Island who can pick you up and take you to Kaanapali side, your best bet is to rent a small car…a taxi would cost you a small fortune, you are looking at about a 45 minute to an hour drive from Kahului to Kaanapali. And I believe the only Hotel that has a Shuttle Service is the Grand Wailea,( but don’t quote me on that.) Aloha and Good Luck, Have Fun.
