Excuse me, but Nancy has no idea what she is talking about. First of all Tanzania, is not a predominately Muslim nation (and it has a long history of religious tolerance) and most people in Tanzania going on safari do look like tourists (because that’s what they are!) No one is going to randomly attack you because you are wearing the wrong clothes. You will notice while you are there that many Tanzanian men have adopted wearing western style clothing too.

Tanzania gets nearly 1,000,000 tourists per year and many of them travel alone. I personally spent 1 month traveling alone in Tanzania and it was the greatest time of my life. Since then I have returned and even lived in Tanzania. I never fear traveling alone and have run into numerous other solo travelers along the way, many of them Europeans.

When traveling alone you do need to take precautions though -but by using common sense you can avoid most any problem. For example don’t walk alone at night. If you go out drinking alone watch your beer and NEVER leave it unattended, it can be drugged and then you can be robbed or harmed. Don’t accept opened drinks from strangers and drink out of a bottle rather than glass.
