What time of year is the best snowfall for skiing Vail/Summit/Steamboat Springs? i.e. early winter/spring?

Question: What time of year is the best snowfall for skiing Vail/Summit/Steamboat Springs? i.e. early winter/spring?
I like to ski in powder, so I would like to know when each resort area in Colorado gets the best snowfall.

Well Steamboat, Colorado, is very well known for its early season snow, so you can expect good snow in november

early spring the weather is warmer and the hills are less crowded, but the snow is still good. late spring the snow tends to get very slushy and after a long run you get really hot.

Early season can be hit or miss, same with the spring. At least in the spring there will be a bigger base, so more terrain is bound to be open whether or not it is fluffy powder, and your chances of hitting a rock or stump are a lot lower. Spring powder can be deep, but often will rot out by the mid-day sun. I live in Vail and I think the best snow is usually in late January, but for early vs. late season, go late, as the days are longer, more terrain is open and the spring parties are in high gear!

I ski in both Vail and Steamboat Springs. While Vail has a bigger/better mountain in my opinion, it also is alot more expensive then Steamboat. Vail is great around December/January. Steamboat is great around November-January. Last year I went in March and it was horrible. It didnt snow for 8 days straight! I would suggest Vail over Steamboat!

Having lived in Steamboat for a number of years, November is hit or miss. We have had incredible openings (always the day before Thanksgiving…Scholarship Day for the SSWSC), but have also had plenty where only a few runs are open. If there’s snow early in the season, go in early to mid December as the crowds are non-existent. Otherwise, shoot for non-holiday times (not MLK or Pres Wnkd) in Jan or to mid Feb. Have fun!
