Where is the best place to stay (hotels) in Washington DC for a family of five?
Question: Where is the best place to stay (hotels) in Washington DC for a family of five?
Is it better to stay in the downtown area or the burbs (taking the metro to DC). Only there for a few days. Would like a safe place but don’t want to pay a lot.

We stayed at the residence inn capital district last year and loved it. I have 2 boys (7 and 11). walkable to most of the sites, could still jump on the subway if we needed to, and we felt plenty safe.
I’d recommend the Days Inn, in the 4400 block of Connecticut Ave NW (in the city itself). You can get a decent price on a room when compared to other hotels in the city. The neighborhood is very safe and even a little quiet. There are some restaurants within a block or two and the Metro (subway) red line is about 2 blocks away. They also have free parking onsite and a rental car outlet onsite so if you decide you need to rent a car, you just walk outside.
If you stay in the suburbs, try to stay in Arlington, VA. It is the closest-in suburb and for the most part a very safe city (there’s a couple of creepy neighborhoods but I don’t think there are any hotels in there). There are also a number of budget hotels in Alexandria, VA and Springfield, VA but make sure they have a shuttle to the Metro because most of those hotels are not within walking distance to the Metro.
I would avoid the Friendship Heights neighborhood of DC and anywhere in Montgomery County, MD, because that’s the “high rent” district. Hotels in Montgomery County will either be very, very expensive or difficult for getting around.
I would avoid at ALL costs staying anywhere on New York Avenue Northeast (NW New York Avenue in the 700-1400 blocks are fine though), avoid Bladensburg Road, and do not stay in the “Capitol Gateway” neighborhood of DC. This neighborhood is not nice. There is also a “Gateway” neighborhood in Virginia and that one is fine.
