Question: Do you know of any good family health insurance plans for cheap?
I currently work in a hopital and pay only $ 200/month for insurance. I am pregnant with my 2nd child and thinking of cutting my hours at work to where I could no longer carry their insurance plan. We also own a small business, so my husband doesn’t carry the insurance. I only have to work 20 hours a week to keep the insurance at my job, and it has awesome benifits, but I would love to be home after the 2nd baby is born. What do you think? Should I keep my insurance at work or any better ideas?

In New York we also a hhave a ‘Haelthy Family’s ‘ plan…I know it as ‘Child Health Plus’ its affordable …(you may have to lie and not report ALL the income your husband’s business makes…in order to get a better rate! but we wont tell!) Im sure most states have something similar….call social services and ask abot Medicaid…its not perfect, but if you REALLY need something ….you have a safety net.

Before you make any changes, you should find out when your policy is up for renewal. If it is soon, you need to do something now. By contacting a broker/agent (not the insurance company, major carrier), meaning and independent, you can provide your current policy to them where they will “shop it out” for you. By doing so, you may find that you will have several options based on your plan to cut back your hours. The advantages of an independent also, is that you should have direct contact with them in the case of an emergency, meaning, a 4am call because of “whatever” you need to claim. That is their job, whereas a direct writer call is just “someone”on the other end of the phone who may not have your best interest at heart. Before you do anything, do your research, by shopping out your options now, rather than “after the fact”, is the best way to prepare. Your premiums will more than likely increase if your employer is covering all or some of your insurance now, but you need to prepare yourself now financially if that is the case.

To have health insurance at that premium is really invaluable. There are no good health plans for “cheap” – you are getting an excellent deal where you are. At least stay through your pregnancy so that it is covered ~ even with insurance it can be expensive….I KNOW….if you want to stay at home, I would highly suggest waiting until after this new baby is born so that you don’t bankrupt yourself. I do not know of any plans that will cover maternity care AFTER you’re already pregnant – I’ve checked them out for myself – and you can also maintain coverage via COBRA for 18 months after you cease your employment. COBRA is where you pay the FULL premium every month (sans your employers contribution) – I was recently on COBRA (and pregnant too by the way) and we were paying over $ 1000/month out of pocket. Weigh the costs first. Decent, affordable health care is HARD to come by – but especially with little ones, it’s imperative to have!

Become an illegal alien. Californian liberal politicians got counties to advertise in Spanish that there is free healthcare available. However, it is not free if you are a citizen. Citizens are expected to pay for all hospital bills and doctor’s visits.

California county politicians even wanted to raise taxes to pay for illegal aliens’ use of hospitals. That idea was rejected by voters.

Courtney is wrong about military health insurance, everything is NOT free for dependents all the time. If someone in the family needs a specialist and there are none available on the base then you HAVE to be referred to a civilian specialist and you HAVE to pay for their services.
As for your insurance needs. I don’t know where you live you might check with your state’s medicaid department, here in California we have a “Healthy Families” program that covers children up to age 19, it is for families that make too much to be considered “low income” but still fall in the poverty level range. Of course it is for children only. I don’t know of any plans for adults like that…but check with your state.
