Question: I need some intelligent and creative suggestion for romantic weekend getaway ideas. Can you please help?
I live in Johnson City, Tennessee (the far Northeast corner). I just returned from my honeymoon a few weeks ago, and I want to surprise my new husband with a weekend getaway (approx. 3-4 days) in September or October. I do not want to fly, becasue airline tickets are outrageous…I am running short of ideas. Do you have any suggestions on romantic cities in the Southeast? I am really trying to keep it under $ 1000.

There are several places I would go if I lived in that area… I’m sure you’ve already been there… but what about Asheville? Go down after school is out, you can get a cheap hotel on the outskirts of town for under $ 80 a night and then go to the Biltmore. Your admission price is good for a whole week. Which is great because it takes several days to do the place justice.

With gas so expensive, you don’t want to travel too far.

But the best thing… I think… would be go to the Smokey’s in October when the fall foliage is at peak, rent a small cabin with a fireplace and a hot tub. You can hike, sighsee, go into Gatlinburg, see the Dixie Stampede or the Mandrel Sisters show. It’s wonderfully relaxing and it won’t be as crowded as when school is out. But they do a brisk business year round. You make your reservation well in advance.

Wherever you choose to go in Sept/Oct, make reservations now. (May/June)
