Question: How do you calculate the 13% sales charge added to New Orleans Hotels?
I’m going to New Orleans in a couple weeks for Mardi Gras! I have already paid for my hotel in full but the confirmation says I have to pay 13% sales tax and an occupancy tax. I’m not from America, I live in the UK and don’t know US taxes. Is that 13% of the total room rate or something else? How is it calculated?
The occupancy tax is $ 1 per night. The room rate was $ 279 per night.

just times the cost by 13% then add that to the cost

I think it’s just like this:

279 * 13%

Not including the occupancy tax.

multiply 279.00 times .13 and that will give you your tax it should be 36.27 so total is 315.27

Most sales-type taxes in the USA are added at the cash register. The tax for ordinary purchases is usually about 8%, and most cities charge a higher tax on hotel stays and reataurant meals.

The occupancy tax is more likely to be a flat amount rather then a percentage, but it can vary from state to state and even city to city.

If you need to know the exact total cost per night best is to make contact with the hotel and ask. For example, the taxes for a $ 119 per night hotel room in New Orleans are $ 16.47, making the total $ 135.47 per night.

Unless what you paid is actually considered a deposit, it is unusual for a hotel to charge for a room in advance and not also charge the taxes, so you really should ask.

Let’s say the room is $ 100.00 American per night for easy illustration. The 13% tax is figured as 13% of the room rate, or $ 13.00 in my example. You didn’t say how much the occupancy tax is, but let’s say it’s another 5%. That would be 5% of $ 100.00, or $ 5.00. In this example, the total would be $ 100.00 + $ 13.00 + $ 5.00 = $ 118.00 per night.
