Alex never thought that she would be spending her summer working with Sean. In fact, she never even expected to see him. When he walks into the door of her family’s rafting business, she is completely shocked. As it turns out, her grandparents hired him on for the summer, without ever mentioning it to Alex.

Alex already has enough on her plate trying to get over her father’s drowning of the year before and living with her grandparents while her mom is in Florida. Now she not only has all that to deal with, she also has her feelings for Sean and the flirtations of one of the other guys from the rafting business, Tommy.

Tommy has always been a flirt but now he seems to be focusing all his flirting on Alex and to Alex’s delight and confusion, it seems to be making Sean a little jealous. Even if Alex and Sean can never be the way they once were, she still wants to be friends with him and he begins to show some of the same feelings. The only time they seem to be able to connect is when Sean takes on the task of helping Alex get over her fear of the river. Sean’s attentions don’t only affect Alex, though. Alex’s cousin Mala seems to be changing right along with everyone else.

Mala is the pretty one and always the center of attention with the guys but lately Alex is getting all of the attention. Mala begins to act out and get herself into more trouble and always manages to drag Alex into it with her. When Mala can’t seem to take anymore she breaks and makes some accusations that Alex may never be able to forgive her for.

Heartbreak River was such an amazing debut YA novel. There were very few things I disliked about this book. In fact, I don’t think I could name one. The characters were all very likable, even at their worst moments. They all seemed to have real personalities and little quirks that made them original.

The ending was also one of my favorite parts. It was such a shock to me. I never would have seen it coming. I do think it was a very sad ending but I really think it helped make the story even better.

The writing style and the story were just so original. I read this book so quickly because I just couldn’t put it down. I had to know what happened next. This is another one of those books that I think deserves all 5 stars.

My Thoughts: I really loved all the characters in this book. Even the ones we weren’t “supposed” to like. I liked the whole concept of the book. It was summertime, there was water, it was a great book. I liked the girls in the book, I loved the guys in the book! It was one of the few that I’ve read this year that I really loved. Lately books have just been mediocre to me, but this one was really good and interesting. I wanted to keep reading it because I actually wanted too, not because I “needed” too. This book is full of parties, fights, flirtations, betrayals and jealousies! It is definitely worth a read!!!

Overall: Great Book!! Go To The Library Or Buy It! Add it to your To Be Read List!

This is my first YA romance and after reading it I know I will look into more of these types of books. I really enjoyed this one and all the characters. I found myself connecting with Alex from the start. She is a strong characters who has had to go through many life changes in the past year, which include losing her Father to the river which she loves above all. I liked the setting as well. The river to me portrayed all of Alex’s feelings throughout the book calm, raging, still, powerful the list goes on and I very much liked the symbolism in. I was shocked my the tragedy at the end but felt that Mills had done the right thing. I am very impressed with this author and I will definitely look into more of her books.

After I read Winter Longing which I DEVOURED and LOVED – I was excited to pick up Tricia’s other novel as well, Heartbreak River. Sadly, I did not love Heartbreak River as much, though it’s got a nice story, some of the elements distracted from the over all enjoyment, for me –

Namely the main character Alex, whom is a bit of a goody-goody, this girl always seemed to do the “right” thing though sadly it seemed like she found disaster no matter what she did. Not only that but with this story coming from Alex’s POV, she sure did wrack her brain with her thoughts – and question EVERY SINGLE THING everyone did…which drove me NUTS, NUTS I tell you! Though, I have to say, maybe part of the reason I did not like that is because I DO that…I tend to over think everything in the same ways Alex did, so it was kinda like reading about myself!

In the end, I liked Alex she grew on me, she also grew as a character, which, I have to say was the best part. Alex, instead of staying stagnant changed, grew and in the end – I knew right where her life might take her! Which made me smile! Alex, is the type of girl you root for… and I defiantly did!

I also rooted for one of the other characters Mala (what a unique name, I love it). Mala, does not have a HUGE roll, in Heartbreak River. I wish she would have been more developed, but I liked her character and I also rooted for her to find peace, it seemed she had her own struggles she was dealing with, I wish we would have seen more into what they were.

In the end, this is a really sweet tale of love, when your faced with horrible odds and really bad luck – it’s a tale of coming of age, learning to accept those things you cant change, and risk hurting to change the things you can.

Bottom Line – Sweet book, with characters, though at times annoying, I could relate to, with a plot that kept me turning pages to find out what happened next. I will be watching for Tricia’s next book, I love her ability to tell a good story! I give Heartbreak River 3 mushrooms.

The Grayton River is nothing but HEARTBREAK RIVER to Alex Landon. The river claimed her father the previous summer, and she also blames the river for her breakup with Sean Kenley. She can’t bring her father back, but she could’ve apologized to Sean, if only he hadn’t had to move to Denver with his recently divorced mom for the school year.

So when Sean walks into Cooley Mountain Rafting to start his summer job, Alex is stunned. Her grandparents failed to warn her that they hired Sean on again. Alex still has feelings for Sean, and wants nothing more to apologize to him for how she acted the previous summer, and resume their romance.

But life won’t be that simple for Alex. She’s constantly fighting with her cousin and best friend, Mala. She’s struggling with her grief over her father’s death and her fear of the river. And Sean always seems to come into the office when one cute British employee, Tommy, is in full flirt mode.

As the summer plays out, Alex has to figure out how to approach each and every one of these issues. Some are harder to deal with than others, and some are downright tragic. By the end, will Alex have the summer she expected, or something even better?

If you’re a fan of Hailey Abbott, then HEARTBREAK RIVER is right up your alley. This story might be a bit “heavier” than an Abbott book, but it still has the feel of a great beach read. The story contains romance, heartbreak, tears, and rebirth. This novel contains the perfect combination for a summer read.
