Washington DC Hotels for Family Vacation?

Question: Washington DC Hotels for Family Vacation?
We are planning on traveling S. Florida to DC on Aug 8-15 for a family vacation. We have two families going with 4 kids, ages 8 -16. We are so very confused as to where to stay. We have the options of flying into Dulles or Reagan. At first we thought about staying in Downtown DC, now we are considering staying somewhere on the outskirts, and taking the Metro to see the sites. I have been online until my eyes are sore, trying to determine the best choices, and have totally confused myself. Can anyone please recommend a hotel in the price range of $ 120.00-$ 150.00 a night that would best fit our needs. What are thoughts of staying downtown as opposed to staying a little farther away , pros / cons? Any info at all would help us ! Thanks so much!!!

anywhere in Arlington, VA, close to town, and near a metro. Ballston, Clarendon, Rosslyn, Crystal City, Pentagon City, are fairly safe areas. Lots of restaurants to choose from.

You should stay on the outskirts, in Virginia stay near metro stations, it’s easy to get into town that way. For your budget. It’s too expensive in downtown, and probably small, and rundown. Plus all you need a clean bed and place to sleep to recharge batteries for all the walking.

I’d like to mount a campaign to encourage people not to go anywhere. Travel has become so expensive and unpleasant that it’s hard to understand why people don’t stay home.
Why are we crowding our highways and airports to get someplace else? Newspapers and magazines are filled with ads trying to get us to travel. They want us to go somewhere – anywhere but home.

HOTEL HARRINGTON. I stayed their last week and i am 13. It’s clean and good service, plus a nice restaurant right under, clean rooms and helpful people. Very affordable and not loud. It has wi-fi, cable and a CVS pharmacy nearby. Close to about everything that would be of good interest, including the Smithsonian, Bureau of Engraving and Printing (very interesting btw), and other attractions. Also the Metro system in very close.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Rosslyn / Key Bridge (within Arlington, VA) in February. It’s just a block or so to a Metro station, and then one stop later is Georgetown, DC — and just a couple of more stops to Smithsonian/The Mall (maybe a ten minute ride) and all it has to offer. It is much easier to take the Metro into DC rather than drive and look for parking. We had no problem driving a mile or so to Arlington National Cemetary (which you should see), but there’s a Metro stop there as well. Reagan Airport is just a few miles and Metro stops away, so it would be “easy” to get from the airport to the hotel.

The hotel’s area was safe enough that we felt comfortable walking with our kids to local restaurants for dinner and back/forth to the Metro station. The price was ~110 per night with a AAA discount. The cost included free parking (rare in DC) and use of the indoor pool (which my kids loved!). Note: the website says that the parking garage has a height of 6’3″ so cannot accomodate trucks/vans, but we had absolutely no problem parking our minivan there. The direct hotel link is below, but we booked through travelocity.com and saw good deals at hotels.com as well.

Fly into National (DCA). You can Metro right into town for next to nothing. Time: max 30 minutes to downtown.

Hotel: Watch the deals. A friend just stayed at the new Liaison hotel on Capitol Hill for $ 105/night this weekend. Its a nice hotel, rooftop pool, etc.

The best deals for August probably are not available yet. So book something that’s flexible, that you can cancel if you find a better deal. In other words, book directly with the hotel. Not on Orbitz, etc.

Weekend rates in DC are low. August is very hot, so you should find a very good rate in town.

Pros: Short distance to all the sights. Good restaurants in walking distance. No need to drive around. Park your car & leave it. Yes, parking will cost you money in town. Liaison was $ 45/night for parking. But, what price sanity?

The cons of staying in the ‘burbs: added travel time; can’t easily return to your hotel midday for a refresher; etc. May need a car… and you don’t want to drive in DC. Period.
