Can you recommend a good insurance company for USA travel?
Question: Can you recommend a good insurance company for USA travel?
Hi, my mum is in Australia and on her way to the Bahamas to do some sailing (hard life..) and needs some travel insurance. Mostly medical cover for USA/world (I’ve seen SICKO by Michael Moore) and cancellation etc.
Can you recommend any companies/policies? She is 53. Is probably looking for annual cover as she will be going away again overseas (Asia) later in the year.
DCK – thanks for contributing, but as I mentioned, my Mum is here in Australia, so it needs to be a company that is based here (the place she is a resident as insurance policies will fly you back if needed, to your home of residence only).
In regards to SICKO, it was in referrence to the cost of health care in the USA, which if you are not insured, visiting or not, you have to foot the bills.
Also, she will probably get annual cover which covers you for several trips a year around the world.

AAA is very popular in the US for offering travel insurance and is considered a reputable company. Travel insurance is temporary and offered by trip. You need to make sure the insurance company is licensed to do business in the area you are traveling. In the US, you can find out information on insurance companies by contacting the state insurance commisioner and asking for information on the company. SICKO is not about travel insurance it is about health insurance which is a separate issue in the US. I do not know the laws in the Bahamas or in Asian countries. However, I have traveled from the US to the Bahamas with travel insurance which can be purchased from a travel agent, insurance company, or sometimes throught the vacation company or cruiseline. Always, when purchasing travel insurance make sure the policy allows for transportation back home if you should become injured.
