Nature Parks KALAHARI DESERT Botswana
1KALAHARI DESERT When viewing the Kalahari from the air it is soon clear that in spite of its arid appearance it does not only consist of desert terrain. Indeed, its extensive and dry savannah is home to a variety of vegetation zones and a surprisingly large number of plants and animals. Covering an incredible two point five million square kilometres the Kalahari extends across more than nine African countries. In the north it borders the Zaire Delta and in the south it stretches between the Atlantic and West Zambia. The largest area of the Kalahari is situated in Botswana, one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. With less than three people per square kilometre it is hardly surprising that it is such an isolated region. Amid the African wilderness we arrive at a luxurious lodge that is surrounded by several beautiful old trees, Deception Valley Lodge. A few years ago the owners of the lodge came to an arrangement with the nearby members of the San tribe that some of them would act as guides for their guests. The Bushmen of the Kalahari have a long and proud history and it is believed that the first settlement of the ancestors of the San was established here around a hundred thousand years ago. The bushmen accompany us on our trip into the desert that is also their home. Nobody knows the mysteries of the desert better than the San tribesmen. For thousands of years their knowledge and experience has been handed down from one generation to the next. Without the knowledge gained from their ancestors it would be impossible to meet the challenge of everyday life in the desert. A walk through the dry savannah provides outsiders with a hint of the tough way of life of the bushmen. The Kalahari is most certainly not just another African desert: it is a very unique world of its own!

Is South Africa a safe place to visit as a tourist?
9Question: Is South Africa a safe place to visit as a tourist?
I would like to visit South Africa one day on a tour. I would like to visit Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban. However, I met a South African couple who said that it is not very safe and sometimes strangers can knock on your door and rob you and threaten you with a gun. Is this true? Is South Africa a dangerous place? Or only certaina areas? Are the police effective or corrupt?
What about those cities I mentioned?

dude, firstly, chill :)
SA is not bad, if we were so bad, we would not be hosting the Fifa 2010 WC, nor would we have hosted the cricket WC or the Rugby WC and other international events.
Yes there is crime in SA, is it so bad to the extent that tourists should not visit? NO :) the crime varies in different areas.
Cape Town, is the best place to visit, so much amazing things to do and great weather, it is the most visited place in SA and second in Africa :)
I’l be honest, Johannesburg is dangerous but not to the extent that you should not visit. South Africans welcome tourists and we are proud of our beautiful home. If we weren’t, do you think we would have fought so hard abolish the laws of Apartheid?
Dont worry , just come visit

4Question: I want to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2010. Can you recommend a tour operator that is reliable and safe?
I am not an experienced climber or hiker, but am in excellent cardiovascular health. I look forward to the challenge and the views. I currently live in Northern California and can train periodically at high altitudes. Right now I am aware of REI. Do you know of others?

Is April a good time to visit Namibia or South Africa?
3Question: Is April a good time to visit Namibia or South Africa?
My Mom and I are looking in to a safari – East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania etc) isn’t looking good due to the rain fall and general difficulty with seeing wildlife, but I was wondering about the possibility of southern africa.
Does anyone know what the weather and chances of being able to see wildlife are like in Nambia and/or South Africa during the first half of April?
Any help much appreciated! Thanks,
Kat

The best time for a safari in Southern Africa is in winter, for three reasons, it is not that hot and obviously more enjoyable, there is no rain so the game must go to the waterholes to drink and of course the “bush” is a lot thinner and one can see deeper into the bush and more easily spot game.
Thus, the best time is June to August but the first half of April ( Autumn )is not too bad so if you cannot delay your visit it will be OK.
Definitely worth a visit, Kruger National Park or private game park Sabi Sabi in South Africa is my recommendation…..enjoy.
