Question: Suggestions for nice hotels NEAR washington, dc?
My husband and I are going on vacation next month to Washington, DC. The hotel prices in DC are insane, so we need suggestions on places to stay within a 30 minute drive of downtown DC.

Stay in Alexandria, VA. You can take the Metro/subway to town easily and the prices are sane. Besides, Old Town Alexandria is a tourist destination in itself and is near Mt. Vernon. It’s also a nice neighborhood with good restaurants and shopping. It’s five minutes south of Reagan National Airport on the Potomac River and 7 miles from Downtown DC.

The hotel prices in Bethesda and Friendship Heights are pretty high too. I’d recommend looking around Rockville, Twinbrook, and Grovesner-Strathmore.

Well, first DON’T DRIVE! Second, check out the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Maryland. It is close to the D.C./Maryland line, just north of the city of Washington, and is directly above the Bethesda Metro Station. You can hop Metro and be downtown in no time flat.

There is plenty of parking at the Hyatt, too. Weekends are cheaper than weekdays due to business travelers. The hotel has several nice restaurants and Morton’s is just downstairs, but Bethesda itself is the home of literally dozens of world class eateries and hot night spots. And it is safe to walk around after dark. Gallery Place at the District Line is an amazing shopping mecca.

Go to the website and check on the amenities at the hotel. Then check out the Metro Transit System’s routes, stops and the proximity of all the attractions in our grand capital city.

BTW, Metro is the way even we residents move around the city. Parking is outrageous (a quarter gets you 7.5 minutes), so leave your car at the hotel and let Metro deliver you.

Best way to see the city? Arrange a tour with one of the many companies that specialize in touring our town. Some originate at Union Station, right on the Metro. Buy a 2 or 3 day ticket so you can hop off and reboard as many times as you like.

I recommend the hotels in Arlington, Virginia, which is just across the Potomac from downtown DC. There are dozens of hotels, representing virtually all of the major chains, mostly clustered in three neighborhoods: Crystal City, Rosslyn, and Ballston. The prices are much cheaper than downtown, plus many include free parking. Each of those three neighborhoods has a Metrorail station, from where you can take the train to downtown DC in minutes.

Go onto any of the hotel locator services, such as the ones below, and type in Arlington, Virginia, and look for descriptions that include those three neighborhoods:
