Anyone know of any travel insurance companies which will cover my travel in Thailand?
Question: Anyone know of any travel insurance companies which will cover my travel in Thailand?
I was meant to be going there on the 3rd June for 7 weeks, but obviously with the british foreign office advising against all but essential travel to Thailand its thrown a spanner in the works, is there anyway i can get cover from a travel insurance company for 7 weeks in Thailand?
Otherwise I’ll have to divert my travels to other countries for 7 weeks which i really don’t want to do cause its only another 37 days till the flight, any advice from people who were originally going to thailand and have now changed their mind due to the political unrest or people who are still going regardless of the problems?
(foreign travel insurance)

Pickin’ up some Thai prostitutes? Niiiice. I like how you think, sir,
Hiya,
I am in a similar situation to you as myself and my boyfriend are supposed to be travelling to Thailand on the 11th June. We initially booked tickets just to Bangkok but since the F.O advised against travel to Bangkok we booked flights out to ChangMai, then to Phuket, Krabi and back to Bangkok so we would only be in the airport, not the city.
However, since the advice changed yesterday to advise against all but essential travel to all parts of Thailand I feel were a bit screwed really!
I took out two travel insurance policies. One additional one which covered for cancellation costs due to airport closures due to violence/unrest. However, the policy states that it does not include “any costs incurred when the Journey involves travel to or from any country or parts of a country where the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office have advised against travel of any kind at the date of travel”. I’m not sure how this works out as we took out the policy before the advice was released but I am going to call the company in the morning to find out.
From what I can see, no one will insure you if the F.O has advised against travel to that area.
I’m sorry but I wouldn’t listen to the advice above me saying you shouldn’t bother with insurance. It doesn’t matter if you don’t take expensive items with you. It will matter if you are ill/in an accident and a hospital wont treat you because you have no insurance for medical assistance.
According to the Student Travel Ass., which is who we booked through, most airlines will full or partially reimburse your flights (or offer alternative destinations) if there is advice against travel or airport closures but only 7 days before your departure date.
My advice to you (this is what we are having to do) is to keep a check on the F.O advice, wait until the week of your departure; if the advice is against going then don’t go as you wont be insured. If the advice has been lifted then take out insurance then (as it will cover you again) and enjoy your trip as normal.
From what Im seeing on the news I think it is unlikely that the situation will have died down by June. The Red Shirts look like they have a lot of stamina. However, unrest often kicks off in Thailand and this could just be another short stint, not a long term situation. But who knows, fingers crossed we will still get our trips! Good luck!
