Most hotels will have a cancellation policy of either 4pm or 6pm day of arrival (local time). Some will be the day before, but they can hold your room up until that time and as long as cancel within the desired period you will not be up for a charge and they will not require a deposit. Your debit card should be more than OK for holding the room and you should not need to give them a deposit.
Beware…when a debit card is used the hotel/car hire companies more often than not hold a reserve against your account of about $ 500 (in addition to the room charge rate). The money should show back in your account within 24-48 hours after departure but could take longer. The same can apply to cc’s too, but usually just with debit cards as the vendor has more to lose.
I am sorry to hear about your bad experience but cc’s are a far better bet than debit cards. The level that they offer of protection is far greater and your responsibility is typically only $ 50 with a cc. Maybe you should re-look at that idea, getting one card with good protection?

I’m of the opinion that it’s DEFINATELY worth it. Never had to actually USE it, but the peace of mind knowing that no matter what I’d have some way of getting where I need to go? Worth it.
(a side note – makes me think of the movie Meet the Fockers – when he decides not to get insurance on the rental, and things are going oh so well and suddenly the car gets wrecked (don’t remember how…) you just never know)
