Manatee visiting dock at Hilton Head Island

We were out to eat at the harbor on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. As we were sitting and ordering our drinks, two ladies came up to us, because we were sitting right where the dock began, to let us know that they just saw a Manatee. A MANATEE!!! Well, of course, Melissa jumped up, grabbed the camera and this is the first of two videos she got of the Manatee. A Manatee, in the wild, one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

“Is he sick?”
No. Probably not. They like to float at the surface, sometimes upside down, to rest (dolphins do this too). And as for it being in Hilton Head, I assume this was early summer, so he was probably just exploring the warmer waters. It’s not unheard of for manatees to travel even farther north. Wherever there is warm water, they’ll be there. -

wow! you are so lucky to get this footage! I used to go down to Hilton head – Sea Pines on vacation every Spring with my parents a few years back – saw loads of alligators, some dolphins & porpoises, but never saw a Manatee! I would love to see that. is it rare to see them? must be, because nobody ever mentioned the possibility of seeing one, as far as I can remember

We think it was a fluke that he was there. It was incredible to see him though. He seemed to be drinking the water that was coming out of the ice machine.
