Yes book in advance. Helps tons. Also, try to get early morning or late night flights.

Typically, if you book an airfare 3 weeks in advance it is the cheapest, then 2 weeks is the next cheapest, and then 1 week is the next cheapest. If you book it in less than one week it will be very expensive. The reason for this is the airlines know that business people, who don’t care as much about cost, will often book tickets at the last minutes.
I’ve had good luck finding cheap airfares at FareChase, which will compare a bunch of different airlines. But be sure you check if you can change your tickets if you think you might have to: sometimes changing them is expensive, or on some tickets, impossible.
Also, depending on where you are travelling, there might be a courier flight. That means that a shipper is using the luggage allowance to ship something, and generally you are only allowed a carry on. I used to find courier flight from NY to Mexico City, for example. Often, though, you can only get on these last minute. It works if you are flexible, but not if you have to be at a certain place at a certain time. You can read more about it here:

Good luck and happy travels.

There are tons of ways…
Check the airline’s website directly… some have web specials below any other places prices… I like Alaska Air for their web specials.
Check out http://www.Travelzoo.com lots of good deals.
Orbitz is good
Expedia is goodAlso, allot of the airlines will give you money off or % off for registering for their sites. Try that.

any of the websites you already see on tv, and are listed by those before me. It really does help, because many hotels/airlines have really become damaged finanically from the september 11, 2001 attacks, so they are willing to offer packages at reduced rates to generate more revenue. The companies who take advantage of this fact just are the middle men who take these offers to you, so they don’t have to advertise themselves and so they dont’ have to offer all their seats/rooms at lowered costs. Also the companies will make additional money off the advertisements on the site.

Yes, booking in advance really does help!
I always use this site:
http://www.flightcenter.comBooking in advance does help – here’s an example:
I booked the first week in February to go on a flight to DC for another week in February – it cost me 908 CAD.
I booked a flight in January for April – for the same place – and it only cost 577 CAD.
So yes! Trust me! It makes a HUGE difference!

I always book directly with the airline. I have a hard time trusting other sites promising me low fares and deserting me when things go wrong during my connecting flight. Book in advance. Know a certain date months ahead and see an unbelievable fare, BOOK IT! In January a Houston-San Francisco flight was at $ 215.00 I waited till March and ended up buying a $ 506.00 ticket. Just monitor fares. I usually use travelocity to find out if fares are up or down. If they’re down, I go to the airline of my choice and book it with them. Avoid the $ 5 fee competitors charge.
