ok so i see all the boats just sitting out in the lakes, rivers and off the coast all the time without docking?

Question: ok so i see all the boats just sitting out in the lakes, rivers and off the coast all the time without docking?
my question is do they have to pay to keep their boats out there? or do you just have to pay boaters insurance or something? i dont know.

Depends on who owns the rights to place a mooring. On lakes and rivers it is typically the property owners. In ocean harbors it is typically the local city authority. If you do not own the right to a mooring, then you rent it of the season.

Moorings…….are generally planned, and laid out to accommodate many boats. Each has a mooring anchor which is attached by heavy chain to a buoy. The boats are attached by heavy line to the buoy. A small tender takes people from the dock out to the boats. The cost for moorings is less than a dock at a marina. however it can be very expensive depending on location. I’ve moored at a few for $ 200 a month, but I’ve stayed overnight at one that was close to that for just that one night. You need insurance regardless of where you keep or use the boat. There isn’t a higher charge for moorings with most insurance companies.

Well… That depends…
Boats, especially pleasure boats (houseboats, live a-board size boats, etc.) don’t pay anything to just “be out there” (anchor out, or “gunkholing” it is called). We can travel about, anchor out, and enjoy the sites, spend a night, a day or a week or more, for free…

There are some exceptions however… many places (most around Marinas) you will see what is referred to as “mourings”… This is to say, that someone (usually the Marina) has gone out there, and “anchored” to the bottom, some large chains, cable, or ropes… and to the other end of this, they have attached some rather large floats, usually about twice the size of a basket ball. Normally a “mouring field” will have 50 or more mourings… in some cases even hundreds…

They or course “rent” this out, and boaters can attach their boats to a mouring – some perminently or for a boating season, and some for over-night or a week, etc. and for this, they of course, are charged a fee.

As a “general rule” if you only see 1, 2, 3, or 4 boats in a rather quiet secluded area, they are most likey “ancored out” and paying nothing.
If what you see is more like a water pond with 20 or more boats equally spaced out in a confined area like water lillies – it is probably a “mouring field”.

Normally however, live a-board boaters can pretty much travel the world and not pay for “being out there”. And by the way, with our boats moured, or anchored out – we then use our little dinghies to get to shore and back to the boat.
