What is the best downtown Portland hotel?

Question: What is the best downtown Portland hotel?
My girlfriend and I are going to be in Portland in late May for a weekend and we have never been there before. What are some of the best hotels in the area? We have done some research and right now the Hotel Lucia, Monaco, Westin, and Fifty are in the lead. We wanted the Ace but it was full. We are 30, love good restaurants and want to be able to walk to most things. If there are any smaller hotels we might have missed or cool spots we should check out, we would appreciate any advice.

You’re right on with the Lucia and Monaco but all you mention are in easy walking distance of some great dining. Portland is a good easy walking city….you won’t go wrong with those choices.

The Nines is *very* nice.
Portland in general is a very walkable city, so pretty much anywhere downtown is going to be fine. The Nines is right next to a MAX train line so it’ll be easy to take public transportation as well.

I have stayed at the Westin, the Embassy Suites and the Governor and they are all nice and in good locations. I haven’t stayed at any of the others, but heard good things about The Nines.

Embassy Suites was probably the best for location and it was a solid pick. It was close to the waterfront and Saturday Market. There are some good bars and restaurants nearby. It is really close to Kell’s and VooDoo Doughnuts.

The Westin was a little farther away from most of the stuff we like to do, but Portland’s downtown is easy to navigate. My wife loved the beds there — extremely comfortable. IIRC, it was like $ 20 to park our car there and I couldn’t find a place on the street anywhere within about a mile.

I think the Heathman and Hilton are longtime Portland downtown favorites, too.

The Nines is the newer hip hotel in downtown. It has a pretty neat design and now that it’s getting warmer the restaurant/lounge on the roof called Departure should be starting to get hopping. Note that Departure is closed on Sunday’s and Monday’s. Lucia is a good spot also with a restaurant called Typhoon. The Vintage Plaza is a nice little hotel that is right next to Lucia. All three of these places are right in the middle of downtown PDX and all are walkable. The Paramount is also a nice little hotel but is a few more blocks up on 9th and Taylor but still very walkable.
