Guy W. Farmer: Not all illegal immigrants are hard-working
http://www.nevadaappeal.com/article/20090621/NEWS/906209947/1029/NONE&parentprofile=1061
The next time someone accuses me of being too tough on illegal immigrants I’m going to refer them to Martha Angulo, the mother of 17-year-old Rene Angulo, who was shot to death in Washoe Valley on Mother’s Day eve by “undocumented worker” Steven Contreras (aka Victor Rodriguez), 24, an admitted gang-banger and suspected drug trafficker.
Mrs. Angulo, who has lived in Carson City for many years, might have an opinion about leniency for criminal illegals in the Nevada court system. That’s because Contreras was convicted of being an accessory to murder in 2005 in a local gang-related shooting. He was deported but immediately violated probation by sneaking back into the United States.
Contreras is in the Washoe County Jail on charges of murdering Angulo and wounding good Samaritan Wayne Nash, 51, of Carson City, in a bizarre incident on Highway 395 in Washoe Valley last month. According to police, Angulo was driving to Reno but at some point Contreras came into the car. Contreras then shot the local teenager to death and wounded Nash, who had stopped to assist Angulo. Contreras fled in Angulo’s vehicle but was apprehended on Old 395 shortly thereafter, naked and hiding along the roadside.
In an interview with Nevada Appeal police reporter F.T. Norton, Mrs. Angulo said Rene was a “good kid, a good son (and) a good brother. My son wasn’t in trouble. I should know. I’m his mother.” She and other family members insist that Rene had no ties to local gangs.
Contreras claimed that he blacked out just before firing a bullet into Angulo’s head, and told investigators that earlier the same day he had “shot at a gorilla” in his Carson City hotel room. Good luck with that story. Police believe that Contreras may be involved with another suspected drug trafficker/illegal immigrant, Jaime Lopez, 20, who led Carson City sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase three days after the Angulo murder. Lopez is currently jailed here on five felony charges.
The point of this column is to remind illegal immigration advocates that they’re making a mistake when they claim that all illegals are honest, hard-working people who merely seek to improve their lives. Unfortunately, a small minority of them are dangerous criminals who should be captured and deported forthwith. Also, local judges should stop giving probation to defendants who use weapons to commit crimes.
Meanwhile, the Obama administration is waiting for the right moment to revive so-called “comprehensive immigration reform,” which would grant conditional amnesty to millions of illegals. Obama is biding his time on this controversial issue while reiterating his support for immigration reform. We’ll be watching.

San Antonio Hotels?
1Question: San Antonio Hotels?
My hubby and I will be escaping to San Antonio this weekend. We want to know if the hotels on the Riverwalk are actually worth the cost ?

Answer by US_DR_JD
It depends on what you are planning to do while in the city. For a couple escaping, a nice dinner on the river at Boudro’s or one of the other nice restaurants can be very nice.
Even though I live in the city, when my wife and I go out for a nice night, we usually go out for dinner on the Riverwalk, then to a show at the Majestic, listen to some music or just take in the Rivercenter Comedy Club.
I think the Riverwalk area can be charming, and would recommend the downtown area, as there are many things to do, and restaurants in the area, and you can get to them by walking the river or taking the downtown trolleys.
But, if you are going to Sea World or Fiesta Texas, then you might want to stay in that area.

Nevada has BAD water. Do the restaurants filter the water they serve to customers?
1Question: Nevada has BAD water. Do the restaurants filter the water they serve to customers?
Two of Nevada’s largest gambling Meccas, Reno and Las Vegas, are in the top 5 US cities with the worst drinking water. I learned of this sobering fact after having spent several days in Reno eating and drinking with relish and gustgo. After returning home, I plopped down in front of the TV and turned on the news. After a few minutes, I heard something that made my stomach turn! The water in Reno and Las Vegas was so bad it made the evening news! I jumped on my laptop and and found a national water testing agency: The Environmental Working Group. Their report verified what I had heard on the news and listed all the poisons and chemical toxins in sordid detail! My mind flashed back to Reno where mere hours ago I sat in a restaurant. Critically, I relived the moment a waitress placed what appeared to be a sparkling clean glass of water and a cup of Joe on the table. There were no warning labels on the glass or cup…there were no signs urging customers to beware of ingesting liquids here due to carcinogens, pesticides and arsenic known to be floating in our water! Mandatory filtration and reverse osmosis should be the minimum water treatment requirements for hotels and restuarants , especially where testing has shown problems that could have dire consequences on the health of innocent people. Now, I return to my original question: Do restaurants gamble with the health of their customers by refusing to take measures to ensure that we are not exposed to chlorinated, toxic tap water after we leave home and enter their domain!

no, they don’t filter the water, all tap water has crap in it that we would not like to drink but it is still considered safe. If you insist on having water just get bottled even though the bottled water is tap water anyway

Your right. everything in the Napa Valley is pretty expensive. Try Calistoga’s Enchanted gardens(707-942-9463) or Beazley house in Napa(707-257-1649) or Hillcrest B&B(707-942-6334).The most expensive ones are in the towns of Yountville and St Helena. The ones I gave you are either in Calistoga or Napa. Good luck
Cheap Washington DC hotels?
1Question: Cheap Washington DC hotels?
Has anyone got any recommendations for cheap Washington DC (or close to) hotels for tourist-y weekend in June? Single adult room.
Prefer to stay in the city centre, but wouldn’t mind travelling in if the route was easy for a first time visitor. :) Thanks.

Washington has a metro… it’s VERY easy to travel anywhere… it’s going to be a lot more pricey staying in the middle of the city than it would we to take a suburb metro in. Look at the ends of the metro and find the cities. Check Franconia/Springfield, Va for hotels. New Carrollton, MD.
