assume all of them have been handled since babies and now are adults

I honestly have zero experience with tegus. I can say however that some Savs are nice and some are mean. Some Savs appear to be the sweetest things…..usually it’s entirely luck of the draw and/or valiant attempts at “taming”. Imprinting docileness is easier with “newborns” than adults. I don’t recommend Savs unless you have a lot of experience in reptiles and are really comitted toward owning one at keeping it at optimal health (should be the goal of any pet really….but monitors especially).
Ackies, however are amost always really “tame”. Ackies are definately my # 1 recommendation to 1st time monitor owners. Their price tag may initailly be larger, but it’s worth it…….you get what you pay for.

well it depends on what your definition if tame is. if your definition of tame means something you might be able to regularly handle then its the tegu. if you want something that wont really sit still when handling it, but will come out every time your doing something in its cage out of pure curiosity of what YOUR doing, and not really try to bite, its ackie(the BEST choice for a monitor “pet” like “obilysk” stated). and if you want something that will hide all the time, be your best friend only when you have food and might tolerate SHORT periods of handling till they get all pissy, its the sav. so like i said it all depends on your definition of tame. personaly i hate the idea of a “tame” monitor. for me , to “tame” a monitor means is to break its spirit and thats not cool . that “dont f**K with me!” attitude is half of the enjoyment of keeping them. i say lets stop trying to turn monitors into puppies and lets start turning puppies into monitors! hahaha!
