There are “star” hotels and “no star” hotels in Bangkok, sometimes they are around the same price. An air conditioned room with private toilet/shower and hot water plus security box storage will start around 600 baht in Bangkok – no star of course! The more you pay the more you get. A hotel room in the 1200 baht to 1600 baht range is not that bad. Smaller cities like Pattaya have hotels that start at lower rates for A/C rooms.
Here are a few sample places you can read up on.
If you are married (no shack ups allowed in this hotel) and you want to save money but be close to things – check this hotel out – the Atlanta. Close enough to malls, street vendors, supermarkets, bars, travel agents for tours, restaurants and most important the SKYTRAIN! (Skytrain is a rapid service overhead train, good for getting around the city quickly and cheap.) Old style hotel with a little charm. Not far from a church.

If you want a hotel that is in a mostly “no bars” area then check this place out – Asia Hotel. The Asia Hotel is directly at a Skytrain stop. A short walk from there you will be on Phetchaburi Road where you will find lots of street vendors, malls, stores, travel agents and more. The Panthip Plaza computer mall is on Phetchaburi Road, across the street is the beginning of a mini garment center.

Not far from the Asia Hotel is the FIRST HOTEL on 2 Phetchaburi Road. Closest Skytrain stop is the Asia Hotel.

If you find that you must spend more money than these places want – you can Google up the Landmark, Amari Boulevard and the J W Marriott – all close to the Skytrain.
Choose a hotel near the Skytrain and getting around town easy will be a breeze. Not sure what you mean by twin package, 2 families in the same room?? Better to have two cheap rooms unless you are “real friendly!”
When you take a meter taxi in Bangkok only pay the meter charge – if you bargain you pay more! Also, grab a moving taxi cab, parked cabs want to bargain the fare.
Meter taxi from the airport will run around 350 baht. When you leave the arrivals hall IGNORE THE TOUTS IN THE ARRIVALS HALL! Go through the doors leading to the street. Out by the curb is the taxi sign up desk. Get a meter taxi and tell the clerk the hotel where you are going, he will tell the driver. Your charges are payable at the hotel – 50 baht surcharge, two tolls probably around 65 baht and the meter fare – insist on meter fare! Price you pay is for ALL the passengers you can cram in – not per passenger! All fares and charges payable at the hotel.
(When you change your money over get some small bills for paying the taxi driver unless you don’t want any change back! A 500 baht note may be too high for a driver to change!)
Good luck.
