Youth groups, Discos, gambling, shows, the every family's got a "drinks way too much" member, activities and much much more. There are nicer cruise lines but I am the "drinks way too much" member of my family and Carnival appeals to that part of me. But I've taken young children, teens, my sister, my mom, husband and friends with me and they all enjoyed it. If you go on a cruise in off season you'll find them dirt cheap but keep in mind you're gambling with the weather. September is always a good month for adults because most children have just started school. I would suggest Carnival since they offer so much for such a wide range of personalities.
