Am I the only one who thinks most of these “art deco” hotels in Miami Beach aren’t worth the price?

Question: Am I the only one who thinks most of these “art deco” hotels in Miami Beach aren’t worth the price?
These hotels looks nice in pictures on the websites but are actually trash when you stay in them. I’ve stayed in a few on Ocean Drive and Collins Ave and was very disappointed. The next time I go to Miami I will fork out the extra cash and stay at Foutainbleu, Ritz or one of those other nicer hotels.

With those hotels you really are paying mostly for the location. They are older and definilty not as nice as the Fountainbleu but I still like them. They have old charm that you cant find anymore. When you get to the bigger hotels a room at the fountain view looks just like the room at a doubletree in Kississimee. The main difference is the view is different.

H&M and Wal-Mart destroy and trash unsold goods

This week the New York Times reported a disheartening story about two of the largest retail chains. You see, instead of taking unsold items to sample sales or donating them to people in need, H&M and Wal-Mart have been throwing them out in giant trash bags. And in the case that someone may stumble on these bags and try to keep or re-sell the items, these companies have gone ahead and slashed up garments, cut off the sleeves of coats, and sliced holes in shoes so they are unwearable.

This unsettling discovery was made by graduate student Cynthia Magnus outside the back entrance of H&M on 35th street in New York City. Just a few doors down, she also found hundreds of Wal-Mart tagged items with holes made in them that were dumped by a contractor. On December 7, she spotted 20 bags of clothing outside of H&M including, “gloves with the fingers cut off, warm socks, cute patent leather Mary Jane school shoes, maybe for fourth graders, with the instep cut up with a scissor, men’s jackets, slashed across the body and the arms. The puffy fiber fill was coming out in big white cotton balls.”

The New York Times points out that one-third of the city’s population is poor, which makes this behavior not only wasteful and sad, but downright irresponsible. Wal-Mart spokeswoman, Melissa Hill, acted surprised that these items were found, claiming they typically donate all unworn merchandise to charity. When reporters went around the corner from H&M to a collections drop-off for charity organization New York Cares, spokesperson Colleen Farrell said, “We’d be glad to take unworn coats, and companies often send them to us.”

After several days of no response from H&M, the company made a statement today, promising to stop destroying the garments at the midtown Manhattan location. They said they will donate the items to charity. H&M spokeswoman Nicole Christie said, “It will not happen again,” and that the company would make sure none of the other locations would do so either. Hopefully that’s the final word. [NY Times][Huff Post]

We are a family of 4 and we are planning a vacation in Hong Kong in December. We are looking a good hotel near a train station or near tourist spots or near shopping districts.
We are arriving there at 8 am on Dec. 25 2009.
We already booked a room in HK Disneyland from Dec. 30 – Jan. 1.
We are looking for hotels to stay in from Dec. 25 to Dec. 30.

Can you please name some?
Thanks a lot :)

Kowloon Hotel is in Tsim Sha Tsui right behind the famous Peninsula Hotel, right in the middle of the shopping area for tourists and 2 minutes walking distance from the harbour. Right across this is the Holiday Inn Golden Mile. These aren’t too expensive, and are 1 minute away from a train station.

In case those are full, try Prince and Gateway, both very close to the above.

Where can I find a list of hotels near Walt Disney World That AREN”T disney resorts?

Question: Where can I find a list of hotels near Walt Disney World That AREN”T disney resorts?
I used to stay at the Grovensors(spelling?) they changed it though and we stayed last year. It was cheap, but this year the prices sky rocketed and they no longer offer meals. so we need one near that area which offer meals and is realtivly cheap. No disney resorts though.
The reason is because last time we stayed at a Disney Resort, we had the worst experience. The Beds were dirty, the workers rude and lazy and the food really wasn’t that great.

I don’t know if there is a reason why you do not want to stay on Disney property, but if you stay in one of the Value resorts their prices are comparable to what the non-Disney hotels will be. The Value hotels start at $ 82 a night. You receive many perks when staying on Disney property.
– Buses run every 15 minutes or so to and from the parks.
– If you are going during a busy season, the parks can reach capacity. If they do reach capacity the parks will stop letting off site guests in. On property guests are always allowed admission to the parks.
– You can have any purchases you make in the parks sent back to your hotel lobby free of charge to avoid having to carry them through the parks with you.
– If you book your hotel and tickets at the same time you get little bonuses like a coupon for a round of mini-golf, or a percentage off a dining experience
– If you fly in you can use Disney’s free Magical Express service which will get you to and from the airport/hotel for no charge.

Question: What are some really good resorts to stay at in Maui that aren’t too expensive!?
I’m getting married in Maui and I need a resort that isn’t too expensive as there are 10 members of the family coming to the wedding and I don’t want it to cost to much for everybody to come! I’m thinking between $ 200-$ 350 a night not more then that. Also does anyone know where the most popular spot on this island is like for shopping and tourism? Thanks : )

The last few times I have been to Maui, it was as a chaperone for the boys’ high school soccer team, so we weren’t staying at a resort. But I would think you could stay at a pretty nice place in that price range. Kaanapali & Wailea are the areas you should be scoping. I like the Sheraton Maui in Kaanapali a lot. It is an older hotel, but the setting is absolutely gorgeous. Lahaina, near Kaanapali, is a good place for shopping & sightseeing.

Congratulations & have a wonderful wedding.

We are planning a family vacation to Hawaii and aren’t sure which island to stay on or what accommodations

Question: We are planning a family vacation to Hawaii and aren’t sure which island to stay on or what accommodations
We are traveling with 3 families. Our parents (70), sister and brother in law (early 30′s) and us ( late 30′s, 18, 14, and 10 years old). We are not sure which island would be best to stay on so that there is something for everyone. Short hikes, waterfalls, and beach are 3 activities that keep coming up…and we don’t know if a resort or a condo/rental house would be the best option. We’d love input from anyone regarding a family friendly vacation and where might be the best place to call “home” for a week.

I would have to say, the island of Oahu to stay at. And the Pacific Beach Hotel. You can do day trips to other islands if need be.
I have stayed at the Pacific Beach Hotel four out of six times and love it there. Very accommadating for families. They also have adjoining rooms for the larger families.
Stay in the Oceanarium Tower at least the 12th floor and up and the Diamond Head views.
This hotel is right across the street from Waikiki Beach, and there are condos in the area also that might suit your choice: Waikiki Banyon is one block further from the beach.
Have fun!!

Some Thai Girls Aren’t Girls

0

Anyone who has ever visited Thailand will know about the beauty of Thai women. In their twenties, they are striking. In their thirties, they are looking more mature, but still most are very attractive.

The women working in the ubiquitous bars and massage parlors of Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket are mostly former housewives, believe it or not, married but separated, with two kids they left back in their village with their mothers. Most are from Isaan, the North-East corner of Thailand, which has a large amount of poverty. Some are from other parts of the country, especially Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, and a very few are from Bangkok or central Thailand.

But about 1 in 100 is not a female at all, but a “ladyboy”, or katoey in Thai. Quite often, they appear more feminine than the real women. I have seen many a farang ogle and lust after a very sexy woman, not realizing that “she” is a “he”.

Like the women, most ladyboys are from Isaan. I have talked to a few on a one to one basis, and asked them when they first knew they wanted to be a female. All said they knew at an early age, around 5 or 6 years old. They said they liked the female manner, didn’t like rough sports, were partial to art and music.

Katoeys are an accepted part of Thai culture, considered to be a third sex in Thailand. Several are movie stars and TV announcers. One is a national kick-boxing champion. You will find ladyboys everywhere, working as waiters, store clerks, hairdressers, couriers, etc.

In North America and Europe, a sex-change (also called a gender re-assignment) operation is considered to be a big deal, requiring many months of psychological counseling before the operation to make sure the person is committed to the change.

In Thailand, a sex change operation is quite common. There are several clinics and hospitals which perform it, and the cost is a fraction of what the western charge would be, typically US00-7000. Nevertheless, for a poor person from Isaan, 00 is a huge amount of money.

There are three main areas in Bangkok where ladyboys are present in large numbers: Nana Entertainment Plaza (on Sukhumvit Soi 4), Patpong Road (off Silom), and Soi Cowboy (close to the intersection of Sukhumvit Road and Asoke Road, which has both BTS SkyTrain and MRT Subway stations).

At Nana, the majority of ladyboys are “pre-op”, meaning they still have a penis. At Patpong and Soi Cowboy, most are “post-op”, meaning they have had the operation to create a vagina. The operation involves cutting out a section of intestine, which will become the vagina. The penis is cut open and inserted into the intestinal tube; typically some of the scrotal sac is used to increase the length of the new vagina. The tip of the penis becomes the new clitoris, and is normally still sensitive after the procedure is finished and everything has healed. The ladyboys I talked to said they could still have an orgasm, but did not ejaculate.

Scar tissue is visible if the post-op ladyboy retains his/her public hair, but if it is shaved off, it is difficult to tell an artificially created vagina from the real thing.

However, this is typically not the end of the story in sex reassignment. The male body is typically larger than the female, even in Thailand, where many people seem to be 80% the size of western people. The ladyboy has to take hormones for a couple of years before the operation; these hormones help him grow breasts and reduce his facial and body hair growth. Thai men don’t usually have much body hair, compared to Western men, but they do have some; hormones or another treatment are needed to reduce or eliminate it. However, hormones have a side effect of reducing the ability to ejaculate.

Males typically have a protruding Adam’s apple, so that is yet another operation: it can be shaved by a surgeon to reduce or eliminate the protrusion. And many have electrolysis to eliminate body hair, especially in the armpits.

If you visit Nana Entertainment Plaza after 7PM (which is when it opens), you will find several hair-dressing establishments located on the decks that run around three sides of the structure. The ones at the front cater to the bar girls; the ones at the rear cater to ladyboys. You can watch some of the ladyboys preening and preparing their makeup.

Some of the bars are exclusively ladyboys. If you enter one such bar, you will find that most ladyboys are more than passable and some are strikingly beautiful. I don’t think I have ever seen an ugly ladyboy.

As far as relationships go, ladyboys are just like Thai women. They want a long-term relationship, and they will try hard to make the relationship work. Many speak some English, but you really need a product like Speak Easy Thai to help you learn some basic Thai vocabulary. If you can communicate better, you have a much better chance of a lasting relationship.

A part of Bangkok’s nightlife that should not be missed by any visitor, ladyboy cabaret shows are professionally done, with spectacular productions (lots of feathers and glitter, good music, and some comedy as well). You can see them at the Calypso Cabaret (Asia Hotel, Ratchathewi SkyTrain station), Golden Dome Cabaret (15 minute walk from Sutthisan subway station), and Mambo Cabaret in the former Washington Theater between Sukhumvit Soi 22 and 24.
