DeKalb residents and Atlanta real estate executive Jason Jones was recently the recipient of the 2010 Duke Forever. Each year this award from the former individual volunteer service award at Duke University.

Mr. Jones earned a first university degree in political science at Duke University in 1991. He then spent eight years in the Navy, where he flew A-6 Intruder attack jets from aircraft carriers.

After leaving the Navy, received Mr. Jones holds an MBA from Arizona State University and completed a solo trip around the world 15 months. He wrote and published a book about the adventure called Nomad: Letters from a global tour to the West. In 2002 he returned to Atlanta, his hometown, and began his career in commercial real estate financing.

Phoenix Zoo Conservation program recognized with state award

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) announced the Phoenix Zoo in 2010 was marked Achievement Award for North American Studies Chiricahua leopard frog conservation of their (CLF) head start and release program. This annual award recognizes exceptional efforts to promote regional habitat preservation, species restoration and support of biological diversity in nature.

â? The Phoenix Zoo is taking the lead in the North American conservation, â? said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy. â? Conservation a high priority of the Phoenix Zoo and all AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums, and this award is well deserved national recognition for this important endeavor.â ????

Chiricahua Leopard Frog Head Start and release program is one of the flagship effort of the Phoenix Zooâ? s Conservation and Science Department. 2010 was an excellent year, marked by celebration of the publication of the 10,000-head began frog. In fact, more than 1,700 frogs were released in the speciesâ? native range in Arizona this season, bringing the total to 11 654 frogs, since the program started in 1995 has been released.

â? The Phoenix Zoo is proud of its longstanding commitment to the Chiricahua leopard frog’s head-start program, â? Said Bert Castro, president and CEO of the Phoenix Zoo. â? We have over 11,000 tadpoles and raised Froglet for distribution to the wild and are pleased to be an integral part of this cooperative conservation effort.â ????

CLFS are federally as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and are listed in the pockets of Arizona, New Mexico, and Sonora, Mexico. The Phoenix Zoo is an active partner in the recovery program for this species, and works closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the Arizona Game and Fish Department and private landowners support CLF recovery. Wildlife biologists to bring wild CLF egg masses of the Phoenix Zooâ? S Conservation Center every spring when the eggs hatch and grow into big tadpoles and Froglet in the head-from the laboratory. The resulting tadpoles and Froglet are in predetermined locations, where augmentation is needed most released. In the wild, put only 5-10% of the eggs survive to adulthood. In the head-from the laboratory, the zoo has an average survival rate of over 60%, observed with a record year of 90% survival rate. This allows the zoo to make a significant contribution, the number of CLFS in the wild in Arizona to make.

Tadpole Task Forceâ? have about 15,000 more hours to head off to trouble and committed to support field studies and improvement of habitats, activities.
