How To Make A Sailboat – But First Purchase Easy Boat Building Construction Plans
0The first thing you need to do if you are going to make a sailboat is to get a decent set of plans that will detail out everything you need to know – be sure it includes a complete materials list.
Choose The Design To Fit Your Needs
Be sure to choose the sailboat design that will fit your needs. If you plan on just day sailing, then you won’t need to build a big sailboat that contains a doghouse for sleeping. You just need to build a sailboat that fits two or three people and has storage for your day needs.
Buy Marine Materials
It’s critical to get the right materials. Be sure to buy marine plywood and marine supplies when you make a sailboat. The reason is that these supplies are made to withstand water damage better than other products.
Detail Your Plan On The Wood
After you have your wood, you will want to draw your plans out so that it makes it easier for cutting. You can do this one of two ways: 1) by using exact measurements or 2) by tracing the design onto the plywood. When you cut, stay on the lines to make sure you pieces are uniform.
Assembling
After you have cut all your pieces, you will need to assemble them, step by step. Be sure to allow ample curing time after gluing or epoxy because you don’t want any leaks.
Seal The Joints And Seams
The next step is to use fiberglass tape and epoxy to seal all the joints and seams of your sailboat. Start on the inside first, remembering to let everything dry and cure adequately before moving to the ouside of the boat. You need to seal the interior and exterior of your sailboat.
Add Your Storage Or Doghouse
Depending on what type of sailboat you are making, you will need to add the storage and/or the doghouse at this stage. Be sure to make ample head room for your doghouse (with a sliding hatch if that suits you) and to include access hatches for your storage built to the size of the items you must get through the hatch.
When this is complete you will need to apply your finish — at the water line and below if you have built a wooden boat, you will want to use marine paint to protect your work. If you want to show the beauty of the wood above that, you will want to get the marine varnish that is available.
Add The Mast, The Sails And The Rigging
This is the last step before taking your boat out onto the water. Ideally, you will want to install a mast on a tabernacle so that the mast can be laid down easily by one person. This allows for easy trailering and going under low slung bridges if you sail on waterways that have bridges.
Ensure that your rigging is adequate and doesn’t get hung up by pulling the lines through it several times. This is the last step before launching your sailboat into the water. Now’s the time to enjoy all that work!
This is the place to get your make a sailboat plans or any kind of boat plans for that matter.
