Question: How many points equal 1 yr in the Marine Corps reserve?
My husband was in the Marine Corps Reserve. He signed up for 8 years. He served 5 years active duty reserve then 3 years inactive duty reserve. Now we are considering a VA home loan. I’ve read online that from the points summary statement they can count inactive points toward the 6 year requirment to make us eligable for the loan. Does anyone know how many points would equal 1 year? Somewhere I read 181 which would be great! But I don’t know if that’s true or not.

you only need 47 drill points a year to be considered a full year of service….if you are short of that they tac on an extra year on your contract…but as long as you get 47 points a year your fine…….

Question: Does the Marine Corps pay for your college if you are accepted into the MECEP program?
I am looking into joining the Marines and trying my hand at the MECEP program. If selected, does the military pay for your full tuition and room and board, much like an NROTC scholarship, or are you required to pay for the tuition and other expenses yourself using student loans or the GI bill? I would like to attend Penn State University if accepted into the program, but with PSU being the most expensive public school in the US, I would be unable to attend if the military does not cover the cost of the school.

The Corps does pay for the school and you get you regular pay while you are there also. But I think you dont get to choose the school. I beleive you only get a wish list.

he said he works for the govt. and could provide financial assistance.. is there really such a thing?.. how would u know if its a scam or not?

Question: Can anyone help with a question about student loan repayment in the Marine Corps?
For a long time I have wanted to join the Marine Corps. I graduated college with a double-major BA in English and History, and owe a fair amount of money (not a massive amount, just more than I would like to), and was wondering if the Marine Corps had some sort of program to help me pay it off.

The thing is, most of these programs seem slanted to those becoming officers. I, however, am not that interested in going that route. Can an enlisted Marine get help repaying there student loans?

Two things, with a degree, you may want to re-consider and go the officer route. You may feel overqualified for the jobs you do in the Corps;

Second, talk to a recruiter. Programs come and go all the time. There may be something out there. (Check everything he tells you. Ask for the specific name of the program and research it.)

Question: Student Loans for Marine Corps Reservist?
I am leaving for Marine Corps bootcamp in October 2010. I have enlisted as a reservist so when I finish bootcamp, mct, and mos school I will be stationed near where I live now. I intend on finishing my Bachelors degree when I get back. I was wondering if there are any specific student loans that are for members of the armed forces or Marine Corps Reservists in particular. Any info is appreciated.

There is not a specific loan for service members. Will you have any GI benefits or tuition reimbursement through the military?

You’ll want to apply for your FAFSA and from there you can apply for your Stafford loan. You’ll want to check with the school you wish to attend to see what lender they work with but it seems like most schools are using Direct Loans.
