Almost Upside Down

night: With all your flight training, there will be times when you get the idea that your monitor is average or do not know what they are talking, perhaps not as daring occur, however. This brings me to a story I one night cross-country with a student.

The flight itself is a very simple and is safe for night flights. The flight is from Arizona Mesa Falcon Field in Wickesberg. I personally have this flight in my program for many reasons. I got in many arguments with teachers who have worked for me on that flight. Many of them refused to fly and finally to the place of the student’s Tucson. In my case, this defeats the purpose of night skiing. After a large illuminated street between two major cities of the light does not expose you to real situations that can happen during a night cross country.

Before John began his pre-flight, he created his new Garmin 95 on the handle. I knew immediately that we have a good time! John said I could not start it until we made the airspace of the Phoenix, which is exactly where it begins, beautiful and dark. He said: “Ok, no problem.”

We took off and to the west, as expected. John was right on the money with its checkpoints and time. The schedules open at the right time. He was an A + in this stage of the ballgame. We had about five miles west of Deer Valley Airport, where it starts getting nice and dark. (Not even a night cross-country, if the full moon, it’s nice to see the big bright moon of 4500 on the ground, but it makes your night cross-country skiing easier. John continues to play with his new toy. I learned way back in 1989, there are times when the work of the instructor is shut up and let the students go. This was certainly one of those times.

The plane began to lose height more slowly than the rigid right-handed reception began. There was no horizon at all, if John had not the slightest idea what was going on. Fortunately, he was one of the students who took my option aerobatics solo before he was with the extreme unusual attitude. But not at night.

Slowly but surely, the aircraft had entered the dreaded death spiral at cruising speed. I waited and waited and hoped for the sound of the wind howling in the plane would give a clue, but no, he was trained to do many times, but he did not pick up. Br

The plan was in a stronger bank. If this was the day I had him on the head, but not at night. Finally it was time to open my mouth. “Anything wrong?”

John got the plane under control, set the GPS, and we had an uneventful flight to Wickesberg then back home to Falcon Field.

Also here is the lesson not to fly the plane! John was distracted from work by his little GPS. If you insist with this stuff, make sure you understand how to use it, and not try to learn it in the plane, especially at night!

What is disorientation, it can happen very quickly, and if it works, it will not be pretty. It happened in a real instrument. I had all my notes, and it was lowered a few minutes before blood pressure.
