Question: Will prices be cheaper flights to Maui in the fall or should I book now?
Prices have gone up for flights to Maui the last 3 weeks. Trying to find a good deal for my siblings and I. Our trip is to honor both our parents who wanted their ashes spread in Maui ( Dad was raised in Hawaii). It seems logical that airfare should go down for fall but I’m not very experienced in this area. I’d appreciate any experienced, educated opinions. Thanks

No one can really predict it. However, it seems rather unlikely that fares will go down significantly, if at all. In fact, they may be higher in the fall.
Oil is at $ 127 a barrel and airlines are losing money at horrific rates. They are raising fares aggressively trying to offset the high cost of fuel. Five US scheduled airlines and one charter carrier (Aloha, Skybus, ATA, Big Sky, Air Midwest, and Champion) have already gone out of business this year or will shut down shortly. Reducing fares makes no financial sense unless passenger demand collapses.
It is possible that passenger demand will go down if fares get too high or if the economy gets bad enough to significantly reduce people’s ability to travel. However, even that will be a temporary effect. It will cause more airlines to go out of business. The remaining airlines will keep fares high since there will be less capacity available.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the days of dirt cheap airfares may be over for awhile.

4 adults are planning our trip to Idaho & Jackson Hole Wyoming in Sept ’10. We’ll fly into Boise, then drive to Sun Valley then Jackson Hole then Coeur d Alene & return through McCall back to Boise.

I am assuming you never been out west. There is no fall foliage here. The trees are evergreens. Meaning they do not change colors in the fall. You may find a stand of Aspens with bright yellow leaves in among the evergreens but not many. Idaho, Wyoming, Montana are states that are high in elevation and very rocky soil. Maples, oaks and other hardwoods can’t survive here and do not live here. So there are no foliage routes. You will see many evergreens, huge mountains of rock, boulders the size of large buildings, and pristine clean, clear water, but no fall foliage.
Also, September it starts getting very cold at night again up by the Tetons so bring coats if you are planning on be outside after dark to see the beautiful stars. Since you are going as far as Jackson Hole do yourself a favor and go through Yellowstone National park while you are there, that is where some of the most beautiful places are anyhow. Unless you are going to Coeur d’ Alene to visit family I would not make much of a fuss if you miss it. The lake is pretty but not worth the extra 6 hours of driving.
