You should expect that each flight hour will cost you roughly 100 dollars. Yeah, I’m afraid you heard me right. In total it will cost you no less than 18k. I hope you will be training in a smaller airport for some reasons. If you learn how to fly in a smaller airport, it means that you can spend more of your 60 minutes up in the air then taxiing or waiting to take of like you would in a larger airport. The only downside is your airplane and tech would not be as good. ANyway, expect 18,000+ in total. Good Luck!

Should someone join the ROTC in college and make the best grades possible, etc?

Or should you enlist right after high school?

What is the ideal career path for someone who wants to be a helicopter pilot in the Navy or Army or Marines?

For Army, look into the Warrant Officer flight program. You need a high school diploma.

To fly in any other branch you’ll need a college degree and good grades.

I’m not demeaning the Army program, it is a very good program. Flying a helicopter or airplane really isn’t that hard. Before WWII and into WWII Marine enlisted flew aircraft. I think enlisted pilots is a good idea.

You’ll need a private pilot helicopter certificate. There aren’t many flight schools offering that, and it’s much more expensive than learning to fly an airplane. Helicopters have a much higher operating cost.

Here’s a few schools around Chicago:

I’d expect it to cost between $ 15,000 and $ 20,000 before you can take any passengers up with you. Good luck!

Question: What is involved in helicopter pilot training?
I just want to know how it works. I’m sure all instructors do it differently, but do you just jump in the chopper, or is there considerable classroom work before we even touch the whirly? I’m sure it’s the latter, so how much knowledge before we take off?

50 hours of class before you even get in a chopper then about 50 hours more of class and flight time before you get to fly solo. But if you get the chance take it. it is the coolest thing you will do.
Spend a $ 100 bucks on a GOOD copter flight simulator game and practice the foot controls
