White water rafting – weight limit? How hard is it physically? What fitness level is needed for 1/2 day trip?
0Question: White water rafting – weight limit? How hard is it physically? What fitness level is needed for 1/2 day trip?
I am going white water rafting with my family, but my mom is worried about weight limit for herself & that she isn’t physically fit enough. My mom has no mobility problems and she works on her feet all day long. She is able to do mild-moderate hikes without difficulty. She doesn’t have any health problems, but she is overweight. I am trying to put her mind at ease, but I am not having any luck when looking on rafting websites. So, yahoo! public, what do you know?
Are there ever weight limits for the average 1/2 day rafting trip? What are they?
What kind of physical fitness level is needed?
Any information related to fitness/weight and rafting would be appreciated. I really want my mom to join the family on this trip!

No offence but how big is your mom? Tell her that it is a blast and she has got to go. I have never heard of any weight restrictions except that you have to be at least 90lbs to hit the class 4 and 5 rapids, and it doesn’t sound like that is a problem. As far as physical strain is concerned there are usually 8 to 12 people in a raft her input will not be missed. Just have her in between two stronger paddlers. I have been on several trips and there are usually at least 3 or 4 people in the raft that do very little paddling. Mention it to your guide and he will make sure to put her in a position that is insignificant. Mom if you’re reading this “Go for it!” you won’t regret it.

Mongaup River white water rafting?
0Question: Mongaup River white water rafting?
Hi,
I am interested in white water rafting with my family at Mongaup River. I have never done white water rafting before so I want to know if, in your opinion, is suitable for a first-time family rafting trip. We are going on our own with no guide. we all know how to swim. We are looking for something with a little bit of excitement while not too crazy. Any comment will be greatly appreciated.
p.s if you know of any other river suitable for my family that will also be great!
Cheers

From the description, it sounds like it’s continuous rapids – not hard, but if someone falls out it could be some time before you get them back in. It would be best to not go alone if you can find another group of people who are running the river. There may be a private whitewater rafting club in your area that could help with that.
Make sure to wear personal flotation devices – swimming in a river without one is not easy. Also, try to ask around to find out if the river level is considered high or low or moderate. I’ve seen people get onto rivers that they thought should be easy and then flip within 100 feet of starting and realize that they were in way over their head.

Have fun on the Salmon River Rafting with the whole family
0work and throw water on a raft, A Salmon River run offers pick something for the whole family, with berries, sing campfire, cave research, also pedicure
By John Muncie
Ended at the cool, deep well of the abandoned copper mine in a rock wall, guide Mike Thurbert turned to the group and said: “. Turn on the flashlight,”
We were about 100 meters in a hillside in Idaho. The lights went out, has quietly as instructed and in a moment of solemnity, 19-year-old Thurbert asked us to consider the phenomenon of darkness. For now each of us was an island, dark alone in the tunnel.
Then someone made a frightening noise ooooo-ing and screaming with laughter clicked, return all flashlights, most of the brightest faces under the chin, turning into grotesque masks Halloween.
ceremony is rare for a rafting tour full of children.
If you’re wondering what a walk in a copper mine to have to do with the raft, you’re probably wondering the same thing about picking blackberries, hit the sand dunes Wiffle ball and nail polish to toe.
Our rafting trip on the Lower Salmon River had to do as much fun with the family in the old, as he did with fast turnaround. It was warm and fuzzy things – sing around the campfire, inventing common meals, games, tell bad jokes, discuss key issues with know-it-all teenagers -. We remembered hidden long after the white water sensations
My wife Jody and I decided for this special experience for family reasons, friends of ours, Fuller, who had studied the journey -. four days, three nights on the Snake and Salmon Rivers of Idaho with outdoor specialists of the river, or boating, rafting companies -. and asked if we wanted to join them John Fuller teaches computer science at our 14-year-old son, Sam Fuller and son, Woody, is a friend of Sam’s.
Our journey began on Monday when we took a bus from Lewiston Pine Bar-developed in the course of salmon, 62 miles upstream from our final destination, Heller Bar We pushed into the river, about 11 clock Our small flotilla of three inflatable boats, three wooden dory, raft and three large inflatable kayaks existed.
Barry Dow, 57, a veteran of 30 years, Salmon, Snake and Colorado rivers, was our guide, but the rest of the crew of seven years, seemed surprisingly young. In fact, three of them were teenagers. In demand on the question of their origin, we found that the raft appears to be in their genes.
“My mother was pregnant with me when she was on the river,” said Thurbert., whose father was a river guide Thurbert that his first ex-utero rafting, when he was 3 years old, drove the raft passengers driven this trip His instructions were both counterintuitive. – “Always lean into the wave, always look to rock!” – And simple – “Hear what I say, and if in doubt, paddle.”
Eric Shedd, 19, had a similar story. His parents were river guides and met on a rafting trip. “My mother says I am less than a year when I was on the river.”
The price for closer ties river went out of Zak Sears, 18, who has his trip on the river until he was 6 months. Sears has downstream and said his father was, among other leadership rafting camping. Then there was the other way, smiled and said “250 miles upstream from my sister and my brother about 150 miles.”
Thrown into
The first three days of our trip were drinking on salmon, a 425-mile river begins in the mountains of central Idaho and ends at the mouth of the Snake River near the border of Oregon and Washington. Salmon is the longest river in the lower left of the 48th For the purposes of rafting is divided into the central branch (top), Main and Lower Salmon.
Each has its charms and its defenders. According to water levels, on our side of the Lower Salmon, in general, less and less challenging rapids. We have faced only a couple that have in Class III. (Class IV and V rapids are creepy and dangerous class VI is considered impassable for a commercial trip.)
The lack of water could be the great white salmon voice a little tame for adventurers, but it was perfect for our youth group and their parents who wanted to rafting without the dangers of the water to experience.
“It’s nothing,” said veteran rafters Jim Eisch, 40, of Tampa, Florida Eisch took her daughter, Kelsey 8, son Jimmy, 11, and his father, Ted, 69 “But I did not know that they are so afraid they would not do it again.”
If we could get the lead early in the band’s trip to the last day, he was Jimmy, smiling widely after his third back flip off a raft and said, “I do not want to go home next time I’ll I do. on a journey of 17 days! “
was in children between the ages of 8 of the trip, the danger in the spirit of each family. Before we were out in the safety guide us several conferences to explain what we do when we went overboard in a rapid -. Or “swimming”, as they had in the jargon of the river
take much information to say which among other things, threw signals from head-knocking, ropes, paper and “La-Z-Boy” . float All this washed cast our minds when separated, Jody and I were on our kayaks into the bung Class III on the second day.
, we quickly bobbed to the surface. In less than a minute we have in the range of a raft or rowboat were, and in less than three paddle we were back on board our kayaks.
The important things, it turns out, were not only procedures but also vigilance and unwavering character of our team we have put off looking and forgot all our teachings. That and the bright orange life jackets we wore always
inflatable kayaks -. Beach rafts, as the sides – has given the tower the most exciting. It’s just you and a little plastic Careering through the rapids. When the waves of white water and relax attack, the key is to paddle hard. “No Lily diving,” Marci Whittman leader told us to leave before the first day. “No tea-operation and waste.”
Two days later, was destroyed early in the more technical (river floor dangerous) rapids, Eye of the Needle by him swimming in the waters rise.
At the lower end of the rapids, he got lucky in his kayak. The leaders were impressed. Her mother was angry. Sam had a blast. “It was fantastic,” he said.
But the fastest lap, just as we were concerned, was in the Dory. Sam also agreed to 15 years Adam Mowery. “That was impressive, Dory,” said Adam.
As wooden boats are rigid, they do not comply with the waves, making it much higher highs and falls like a mini-roller coaster. And climb for the fastest lap of all the leaders, we bow. This means packing your legs around the bow, clinging to a rope and riding a bucking bronco as the boat.
Follow the sun.
Except for some white water river were soothing stretches lazy days swinging and Arts of spectacular mountain scenery framed gold and deep canyons. On the first trip leader Dow had suggested that we leave our watches behind. The sun was our Clock and that the applications to Dow on his conch shell blowing, call for our food.
, then two or three hours spent on the river to cool sometimes overboard to swim to get. We stopped at a sandbar for lunch and swimming or games, then returned to the river for a few hours.
We usually pulled by 4 or 5 in the afternoon, which left much time for on-shore activities. The first day set the tone. A few fathers have tried their hand at fishing while the rest of the adults asked for exemption from the 95-degree-plus heat and benefits the children into the water’s edge. Later, someone started a game Wiffle ball. When the wind blew the ball into the river, 13-year-old Amy Fuller, shouted:. “Seventh inning stretch and all jumped into the cool water
cook Finally, heavy clouds, relief and shade, and some thunder . rain in the morning .. It was clear and dry
The first night before we went down the business of family fun, Dow has the dangers of life on earth He was very cultured discussed Stuff – Poison Ivy, hornets, brown recluse and the rare black widow, and the rarest rattlesnakes. “It is important,” Dow said solemnly. “Do not harm animals. This is their home. We are guests. “Some parents hoped compliance with the guidelines for the river and its inhabitants would rub off on their children.
” My kids are city kids, “said Susan Mowery, the Indiana mother of Adam and his sisters, Anna, 12 , and Abbi, 10 “I would like to show that there’s more to life from Disney World.”
Guide Matty Wilson, 28, burst in a fire orange, pulled out a guitar and with other leaders and Thurbert Sears, sang folk songs and pop, so old that even parents recognized her.
soon ran out of fire, so that a slight breeze in the evening, the sound of guitars, a large moon through the clouds to try appear, and a group of parents who their children are doing more than just playing video games.
It was just one of many moments on shore leave. “At this point many of us had painted her nails. Whittman, a professor of art in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, when she is not a guide, a lounge set in his raft. At the end of the return was a studio where girls and boys, some younger painted rocks and sand was art. In the middle, she painted her nails.
After a science teacher John Fuller on the long trip on the river was an appendage. For Fuller, the facts are fun, and it was not long after we left he got a trip leader Dow over the river and its flow. At that time he ran a small 7000 cubic feet per second, CFS, or in times of flood, it was more than 100,000 CFS. Dow said the trees from driftwood to banks and said: “.. Imagine the river is very high, it is like a wild animal”, preferably moment
Fuller on trips, at least scientifically, is a BlackBerry Patch comes just below the mouth of the Copper Mine. It looked admiration guide 50 yards threw in pens in the mouth of another cause. And he gave him the idea in a scientific laboratory, with the physical introduction of the grapes (in the absence of blackberries)
There is no need to teach the physics of the fun. The children of the trip were experts. On the second day, more and more confidence in their new surroundings, she jumped from the raft in water to cool off. The third day, she swam to the bottom of the class III. Splash fighting erupted regularly.
Thursday afternoon as we approached our goal Heller Bar, no one wanted the trip to end. gathered in the night and guide customers to a farewell dinner at a restaurant near Lewiston, although both families had to change their travel plans. do
While toasts and testimonials, the Dow rose and spoke for the channels with the words: “We hope that the river is about you and gave you a special gift because it is not us.” br >
When we left the restaurant, were families exchange e-mails and Whittman painted a few fingernails left blank on the girl.
months before, when the idea was to pay Fuller family rafting, Woody, with teenage disdain, as “the silent journey.” He then had a new name for his adventure rafting on the Lower Salmon River.
“Now, he says,” is the great journey. “

In this video, it shows my family and I raft at the Stanislaus River near Knights Ferry, CA. It was my first time rafting so this was scary and fun at the same time! We had to take a bus to the rafting area. I thought that the river was rough but it was just level 2 on the rafting scale. It goes up to level 6! We saw people jumping off rocks and into the river. There were lots of obstacles while rafting on the river, such as rocks and trees. After a few hours rafting and getting wet, we ate lunch in a shady picnic area. Then we hit the river again. It was a great experience and we were all tired after the trip. Enjoy the ride!
