any tips on our BEIJING & SHANGHAI CHINA tour?

Shanghai area will be spring, so light jacket weather.
The best thing to do in Shanghai in spring is get out. Go to Hangzhou (1 hour by train) to see the west lake, or Suzhou to see the gardens. Don’t forget to visit one of the small canal towns (Xilan, Tongli, Wenzhou among many others).
In Shanghai the obvious places like Nanjing Lu and the Bund are good.
Beijing will still be cold but above freezing, and may be quite pleasant, might just be starting spring too (I am not sure, but should have cherry and plum blossoms). So medium jacket weather.
Beijing has all the big attractions, but most are Qing Dynasty (less than 300 years old). If you have the chance when you are in Shanghai go to Nanjing for a lot of Ming Dynasty (500 year old) attractions.
I have eaten a lot of good Beijing Duck (peking duck) but never in Beijing. But the restaurants are generally pretty good when you go for old beijing style food.
Shopping, well prices in China are getting fairly high. Generally in the tourist markets the prices are double or triple what they are worth. If you are in any of the market shopping areas (Eg, Beijing Silk market) and there is a price on the item, it is not the real price, but the will pretend it is.
Most places in China sell the same things as everywhere else, so bargain in one place, then use that to compare with other places and get the price down. In Beijing they often refuse to drop the price and say you should go home to get a better price. So I just walk away and the price, of course comes down.
Also, always check what you buy. Often they will get you a “new” one, which is not so new or has some problem.
What is a decent expat salary in Shanghai?
0Question: What is a decent expat salary in Shanghai?
I got an offer for 12,300 RMB/mo. It is a 1 year contract. I am a single woman. Job also pays for flight, insurance, 1 week paid vacation and visas. I have been a teacher for 9 years in the states, have 2 masters, one in education. In China, I would be teaching English as a foreign language. Is that a salary of comfortable living? Based on my background, do any expats currently living in Shanghai think the salary is high, average, low? Any advice?

That sounds already quite high for a teacher in China. Make sure you really get it, since often school like to deduct some money for all sort of reasons.
I suggest you check some of the special teachers forums, such as www.eslcafe.com
