If you are planning a European tour should look at the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento in the Gulf of Salerno. These attractions so popular with jet setters and many others are part of the Campania region of Italy in the south west of the Tyrrhenian Sea. This region is not detected by far. We are in the coastal city of Salerno and head west along the coast of Salerno, Amalfi, Ravello, then north is the start and drive along the coast to Positano and Sorrento in the Bay of Naples, including Naples.

Salerno, a population of about 150,000 was populated long before the Roman period. Schola Medica Salernitana His (Salerno Medical School) is the oldest university in Europe. By the eleventh century it was the center of medical knowledge in Western Europe considered, but from the thirteenth century, he was on his way down. Before departure, please visit the main beach of Positano, Spiaggia Grande and walk along the promenade, Via Positanesi of America, for the thousands of locals, who emigrated to the United States, including New York appointed to seek a better life. Sorrento, about sixteen thousand people, is about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of Naples in the Bay of Naples. It was a place for perhaps 2000 years. Notable visitors included British writer, Lord Byron and Keats, the German author Goethe, the Russian writer Maxim Gorky and Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti.

Sorrento has excellent museums. Museo Correale di Terranova proudly displays his collection of sixteenth, seventeen and eighteenth century paintings, furniture and decorations. Its grounds are beautiful as the view. The Museo della Bottega Tarsialignea (inlaid woodwork museum) is in the tradition of marquetry as active in the area dedicated to Sorrento. It contains a nice collection of these pieces of tables surrounded appropriately selected, prints and photographs. He Museo Campano Mineralogico (Mineralogical Museum) is relatively new. Its international collection includes minerals from Mount Vesuvius and Monte Somma. There is also a collection of dinosaurs, including baby dinosaurs and dinosaur eggs and a screen Permian reptiles that preceded dinosaurs by millions of years almost innumerable.

There is much to see in Sorrento, including the historic center with the remaining walls of protection from the Middle Ages, the fourteen century Chiostro di San Francesco (St. Francis monastery) with its adjacent convent, which they have before, perhaps, 700 years, and the eleventh century Basilica of San Antonio dedicated to the patron saint of Sorrento. What about food? As mentioned in other articles of this series, there is much food in Campania. Lemons are a local specialty, especially when the crusts are converted to a sweet liqueur known as limoncello. Anchovies are another local specialty. I do not recommend them together.

Let’s a sample menu, among others. Start with Spaghetti alle Vongole (spaghetti with clams). Then try Spigola (sea bass). For dessert indulge Crostata all’Arancio (Orange Tart). Make sure your well-being increase by including local wines with food.

We conclude with a look at the wine of the Campania region. Campania ranks 9th among the 20 Italian regions dedicated to grapes for both surfaces and the entire production of wine annually. The region produces about 64% red and and nearly 36% white, because there is little ros? Campania produces 17 DOC wines. DOC is an abbreviation for Denominazione di origine contrôlée, as the designation of origin, probably a wine can be implemented with high quality. The G means DOCG Garantita, but it is actually no guarantee that such wines are truly superior. Only 2.8% of Campania wine carries the DOC or DOCG. There are three DOCG wines: the red Taurasi, the white Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino white. I tasted the Fiano and found it upscale.

There are two DOC wines produced in this area: Costa d’Amalfi and Sorrento peninsula. Both are made in a variety of styles with a variety of local grapes. Try it. But you can buy better wines from Campania.
